They Who Do Not Exist

Author's Note:

The whole purpose behind this story was so that I could share this particular chapter with all of you. Due to it not reaching the minimum word requirement of 1000 words, I could not properly post it, thus forcing me to write the rest of this short story just to get it out to you. In the end, it was necessary and I enjoyed adding to the lore of The Lost Element with this little prequel. I hope you all enjoy it.

How much time has passed since the moment I was sealed within this accursed stone cell? Time means little to me with nothing to do but slumber, watch, and listen. Much of my strength has returned after thousands upon thousands of nights, but not quite enough to break these shackles. My fail-safe set upon the younger child of the illegitimate king and queen of this world proved fruitless as the Elements of Harmony twice over rendered her harmless. They have stronger wills than expected.

Still, I have not been biding my time idly. I have spent these past millennia letting my mind wander. Thinking. Planning. Remembering. Trying to recall something of the distant past that may prove useful to me when the fateful day arrives. And sure enough, there is something that indeed can provide me with vital aid when these stone walls around me finally come crumbling down.

Nothingness.

Eons ago, during my reign, bold scholars sought to achieve the impossible. To create life out of just that. Nothingness.

By some miracle, they succeeded. But even then, it was by no means perfect. While they were able to create life, it is simply not possible to create a soul from nothing.

These soulless dolls… These…as they would come to be known…“nonbeings” physically resemble the creatures they are crafted to imitate. Yet they are still imperfect. No matter how self-aware they may become, they can never develop a soul. When they break, or as the more sympathetic observer would say, die, they fade back into absolute nothingness, leaving absolutely no trace of their existence behind.

Nonbeings are nonexistent in the truest sense of the word, their creation and demise being equally cruel. They always begin as emotionless puppets, but are able to learn and develop identities of their own. But their unavoidable physical anomalies cause them to be easily identified from natural beings. They may seem to become like normal people, but they are empty inside.

The creation of nonbeings is an act of sheer cruelty. The sight of them beginning life as barely more than dolls to their final moments of realizing that nothing awaits them beyond death… It is rather…entertaining… That expression of absolute despair.

The more I think about it, the more useful these nonbeings sound to me. Far more than any of Grogar's reanimated corpse minions from long ago. What if I were to craft one in the visage of another natural being? One of great power and skill.

My time to escape this oubliette draws near. And I have seen the man I intend to mold my pawn to imitate. Nonbeings have a rather laughable habit of developing strong senses of identity in a vain effort to validate their pointless existences. And nothing is more convincing of one’s existence than memories.

It will be my finest tool. The cornerstone of my return to power. For what better being to model a nonbeing after…than the man who slew a god?

in the picture at the last chapter, Is that James' Inhumanity? or the last emperor of humans?

6934398 Neither. It was placed there in that chapter for a specific reason. You'll see much later during the Endgame arc of The Lost Element.

This was fantastic. An absolute hidden gem of Fimfiction. It's an absolute tragedy that stories like Squeaky Clean Fun get more than 20,000 views whereas stories like this get a mere 130. But this was an awesome origin story of how the world of Equestria came to be. I like how you wrote it in the first person, it's not often that we get to see inside the mind of the embodiment of all evil, and of course it makes the most sense, it's his story, the story of how the world came to be, the world which he changed from nothing to a thriving civilization. I also like how his name is never said, and you let the reader work that out for themselves over the course of the fiction. It gives such a cool sense of power and mystery to his being, that by reading this fiction you don't know his name, you have to work out who he is for yourself.

I was a little intimidated by the word count of The Lost Element, so thanks for helping me get around that, and you gave me an awesome place to start. I have liked and Favorited this story and I plan to read at least some of The Lost Element.

6935034 Already, I'm anticipating the Endgame arc! any idea when the main story will be completed though? (Just so I can read it again from start to end ;)

THE BLACK RAVEN COMETH!!!!!! :pinkiegasp:

7352081 It may be years.

7352097

Oh. (btw, how old are you? Forgive me for asking.) And I shall stick with this story till the day i die!

7843499 Nope. She and Orbash were OCs developed by another artist in the fandom a few years back to be used in a short comic. I just liked them so much in terms of design and name that I chose to incorporate them into my works. The artist even gave his blessings.

Try searching their names on Derpibooru and DeviantART.

7843641 Coolio. Welp, here's to reading the sequel and not the alternate ending to it! I'm sorry, but that first chapter is too cruel... I hadn't even read the regular ending and knew that was painful... You're a great writer man.

7843682 It's appreciated. But now that you've read the whole thing, may I get your full opinion on this story?

7847646 Still working on The Lost Element, but it looks awesome! A little rushed for the Fluttershy love scene since he had only been there for a week, but hey, I couldn't care less! I get a feeling that you'll make it feel right at home in the later chapters!

7847653 I do admit that the first volume is the story's weakest link, but what I meant was this story. Before Time Began to Flow. Feedback has been extremely sparse, so I'm eager to hear what your thoughts on it are.

7847691 :ajbemused:This thing? I'll give it to ya straight...:pinkiehappy: It rocks!

I sooooo want to use the early world you created, after the miasma or shortly before it's containment, as a pathfinder setting, adventurerers sent forth into a world taking it's infant steps, taming the wilds and becoming history

7860372 You can, so long as you credit the source.

7952211 Long time no see, Teldryn. You chased that little snot out of Riverwood again recently? Maybe across the brook too?

I'm way behind on the story still, the chapters are fucking huge. This has intrigued me though so I'll probably come back to it soon.

8131991 Depends on how much warm air was actually carried to that section. And being "warmer" doesn't necessarily mean it was actually warm. The whole planet was cool at best before the creation of the sun.

Is the narrator of this story the main villain of Endgame?

I have been trying to come up with a backstory similar to this for a story of my own, yet to see it not only written in perfect, intimate detail, but from the perspective of what could be the antagonist of this story's sequel that I will read soon? I'm absolutely speechless!

10/10 for you, my friend! You deserve it, and I look forward to reading the sequel in my free time.

The main character of TLE, James.
A human man who kills Discord himself.
I highly recommend reading The Lost Element for the whole thing.
