Look, I enjoy your story, but for all that is still decent and honest on the internet, please mark your character gallery with the blue "OC" pony. The "Human" tag does not substitute for it; Batman is a human, but he is not an Original Character. See? Brony please.
2654047 I believe the OC tag is for OC ponies as the human tag covers humans. Believe it was in a post by Wanderer D. I can't actually find any information either way. Will ask a mod. Either way, Thank You.
2535490 One. You have the adorable assumption that Jets can't go more then twice the speed of sound, and thus, Rainbow Dash, that's adorable. By modern jet standards, that's not even difficult.
Two, I don't know about other countries, but the US has Aircraft Carrier mounted laser cannons, called LaWS (Laser Weapon System), now. Laser, as in, Light, as in, Mach 881,000. Have fun dodging Invisible Death Rays that are more then 800,000 times faster then you Rainbow.
Three, Rainbow Dash is faster then was acknowledged as physically possible in series, meaning no other pegasus is as fast as she is, meaning no super sonic teams of pegasi.
Four, Nuclear bombardment is a thing, we've NEVER DONE IT BEFORE, because it's never been necessary, but as you acknowledged, Celestia could theoretically kill all life on earth with a thought. We have tens of thousands of Nuclear weapons.
Against that? There is no such thing as overkill. There is only The Atomic Shield Busting Jackhammer. Hell, if you want to escalate THAT MUCH, who needs accuracy for Pegasi, pop a neutron bomb into the clouds and let them be boiled alive from the inside out by a force they can't see.
Hell, put a nuclear landmine or twelve in the ground as the shield army advances and burst it while they're over it, who needs to crack it. They don't have radio, so we'd be able to do it several times before they even noticed.
Raise the Second Sun as many times as it takes, dispense Nuclear Fire like candy. In such a situation the only survival method is to win, IMMEDIATELY. Fuck casualties, fuck radiation, fuck morals and fuck collateral damage. Even killing billions of our own people with fallout would be utterly insignificant to killing Celestia before she could (Maybe) destroy the Solar System.
MAD is a thing for a reason. Past a certain point, Escalation doesn't help anyone. It's why, in spite of what every misanthropic retard has thought for the past 70 years or so, there hasn't been a single military use of Nuclear weapons after the first two. It's not worth it.
Rainbow Dash can go mach5 without sonic rainboom assistance. But laser weapons aren't fully deployed yet, and requires ships. (assuming a war happens)
Must others be as fast? Guerrilla warfare? Not to mention if she has bombs in tow. And not to get started on poor Pinkie.
Nukes would need a legit threat and depends on what international relations had to say. Would they even nuke their own country if they have no support. No to mention that would require a preemptive strike. And that would mean they viewed Celestia as a threat and felt she was going to attack.
And the landmine wouldn't work. *spoilers * because it would require leaving the portal unguarded. That would be a beach head.
Neutron bomb. Definitely went dark there. But I think that comment was made for why Celestia wouldn't just toast Earth. Besides, would she commit outright genocide?
2863583 Your source for Rainbow going Mach 5 please. Cause there's a sonic boom no matter what when you hit mach 1. That's what the main part of the sound of a gunshot is. The Bullet makes a tiny sonic boom.
We know at the least she can fly twice as fast as terminal velocity, ie around 400 mph. Give or take. Which is pretty impressive... err, well. Impossible honestly, but- IT'S MAGIC SHE DON'T HAVE TO EXPLAIN SHIT.
Also, while Ship mounted anti aircraft lasers aren't fully deployed yet, Rapid Firing Jet Mounted Laser Turrets that can melt tanks have been around for about two or three years. They're called ATL's. We've just never had need to use them yet. They're mainly for shooting ground forces but refitting them for hunting rapid speed targets shouldn't be overly difficult. I mean we have little bug zapper stands that shoot mosquito's out of the air with tiny heat beams from a couple hundred yards away, because fuck malaria.
Also yes Neutron bombs are very cruel and unfair. They're a siege weapon specifically made to kill everyone for miles with radiation without destroying all their stuff, so America can steal it or take their fortifications. There's a reason Russia called it a Capitalist weapon. It just also happens to be uniquely suited for Pegasus hunting.
Like Blast fishing, but with nukes instead of grenades and Pegasi instead of fish.
The Mines thing was in reference to his invincible marching shield wall plan. In this fic it would be unnecessary, as a war with such a tiny bottle neck is laughable on all fronts, either side could end it just by sealing it in stone/cement.
Also. At some point. Someone must show Twilight one of our Positronium Annihilation Gamma Ray Lasers. Or maybe one of our Freeze Rays, though the freeze ray would be far less impressive to her most likely. (We have freeze rays now, if you didn't know. You use a laser to propel a certain type of gas and it'll blow off the electrons from the targeted objects atoms, causing a 120 something degree temperature drop per second. We also learned we can make it rain by shooting clouds with it, I think we're trying to get them into a form of mass production atm, since they're so much better then our current methods at cloud farming.)
As for ATL's, wasn't it the Air Force who said they weren't feasible? And proof of concept doesn't mean they are capable of field use.
Planting it in concrete? What effects does it have on materials? It certainly doesn't like magic. But love the low tech approach
The other lasers still aren't field ready and shooting down a mosquito is much different than shooting down a pegasus. The energy output is much larger. And while there are some that can burn tanks, its in a controlled setting and they were stationary.
2867243 Wanted to give a more thorough analysis of planting the portal in concrete along with a list of issues that would entail. Mostly because it was a fun mental exercise, brought me back to SG-1.
1) How do you stop it from just pooling on the other side? You would need a stop there which would mean either cooperation or some way to stop it.
2) You could use preformed slabs and smush them together, but that would unboubtably leave at least several microns of open space which bring me to the next issue.
2) How does the portal transport material? It seems instantaneous, but does it require re-materialization. If its the prior then sending a jackhammer on this side, or even just a spear could pick away at it enough for, let's say c4 to be planted and just blow it to smithereens. If its the latter then a simple laser should do the trick, depending on how it reacts to energy weapons.
3) neither side understand it, and its a huge font of intel. Not to mention forming a relationship or at least protection from another species. How can you defend yourself from a threat you cannot see? Not to mention the further political issues that would entail dependent upon who did the sealing.
And thank you. Don't get to talk sciency stuff that often, though still think neutron bombs are a bit too gruesome, the uni-directional speakers and strobe lights defensive system (can't remember the actual name) is much cooler but still deadly.
2867825 That Video has long since been discredited. Brutally. One particular discrediting brings the 400 mph measurement I used.
There is also the fact that expecting them to use the advanced mathematics necessary to perfectly draw and animate a mach cone would be absurd to expect of them.
Besides, catching Rarity would have been trivial at mach 1, (That's more then three times terminal velocity, which Rarity wouldn't have fallen long enough to reach, since Cloudsdale isn't that high up.) if she could move at mach 5 without the Rainboom, that scene makes no sense whatsoever.
Also, you cannot hit Mach 1 without forming a mach cone and the following boom, If Rainbow flew faster then sound, we would see and hear it, for miles. And when she does, we do.
The laser isn't feasible for tank hunting, for several reasons, but the need for hitting small quick targets that can't be locked onto with missiles that can CAUSE HURRICANES would pretty handily take all complaints and send them screaming into hell.
Besides, actual jet combat takes place from an average of 14 miles apart. It's not like Ace Combat where you can ram into the enemy fighter by accident. The Pegasi literally wouldn't know they were under attack until they started burning.
The Portal is in a room with a door pony side. Also concrete isn't like water, put the portal in a box and just dump a 100 tons of concrete into it and eventually the concrete leaking through the other side will fill the room and either jam the door or break it with pressure, either way, the portal will be at least temporarily dealt with for awhile.
3139413 I realized that after the fact, the explaining too much. Unfortunately this is literally my first foray into writing non-academic papers. Also the pursuit of style because there are so many different ways to write a story (Clancy and his annoying habit of describing everything, Asimov with his lack of describing anything, name those two because those are the first examples that came to mind). Part of it was also trying to set up a character quickly or 'hint' at something coming up but it just came across very heavy handed. Show versus Tell.
The gritty reason for the portal formation was to make sure people didn't think it was just going to be happy and because it pops back up later.
And I appreciate any cents I can get. Many Thanks.
33568063357163 Just because it was an accident doesn't mean it couldn't be reproduced. With enough study it could be. And there is no proof all ponies are shitty liars.
And we have also proven those means of war can be used for good.

That will be answered. Can't say more just yet. "spoilers".
But be careful what you wish for.

OK. That is some impressive thought. I see issues with both actually.
But first I want to let Thait have a chance to defend his point.

That's enough time.

As I have said on numerous occasions it needs editing. However, they are rather hard to come by.
