Well, if you want some advice... Everyone being bored because the holodeck is down seems a stretch. Say...
All non-essential systems, like the holodeck, all e-books, and computer games, etc, (and most of the good tasting stuff from the replicators) have been moved to a secondary computer core, for security reasons, so hacking the holodeck won't give you control of the ship.
That way the secondary computer core can be down, meaning there's nothing left to do but play chess.
