Joseph Stalin's order 227 not a step back

What is NOT fascinating is Ironhide's whining. She has been complaining of a "tingling" sensation ever since she killed the beast yesterday.

Ooooooh no no no no no

For the record, I will begrudgingly state that Second Glance claims to have been feeling the same thing in his hooves for a few days....

I really liked this story. The idea that nothing like this has ever been discovered during past expeditions was a really neat twist. Big fan of stories like these where characters venture into unexplored zones and realize that theres a reason they're best left unexplored. Also deer on hindlegs are always creepy, but adding the context that walking on ones hindlegs in Equestria isn't common for most races really drives it home

Well, :pinkiesick::pinkiesick::pinkiesick::pinkiesick:...

Canterlot, and if they're not successful, the rest of Equestria, are doomed.

But what unnerved me more was the blasted deer's interest in us. I understand that mapping out an area is a slow process, but deer are typically quite timid. Even if we weren't moving all that much, a deer would ordinarily flee from us if at all possible. Sure, I've seen a curious deer or two before in my day, but nothing like this. It kept a safe distance, always seeming just out of sight, but undoubtedly there. And when you looked at it, it wasn't afraid to look right back.

deers

Who was the first to cross path to The Undiscovered West?

No, the standard plural of deer is still deer.

Oh
While the other comment mentioned a call back to your previous story. Personally it was Anon and Flurry Heart.

This wasn’t bad! A little clumsy—too much straight exposition at the beginning, I felt, which made it feel a little slow, and the ending came across a little flat—but you had the right idea. I know it isn’t as popular as your Anon stories, but keep at it!

that was neat. classic short horror.

Ironic that the first to come into contact with the worms lasted longest. Although I'm not sure how the double appendage effect on some creatures came into play with bodysnatchers

this fic rules!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, they're boned.

This is certainly different from all your "Anon x creatures" stories. I don't really read most of them, but you've consistantly appeared in the featured page non-stop, so congrats! This fic appeared there too.

This sounds like a start of a well paced creepypasta. Or normal horror story. I'm curious how the story will go, assuming you're going to continue this.

After all, weren't there missing adventurers who went there before?

I honestly expected it to end with Celestia starting to feel a tingling after reading the letters...

This needs a sequel, where Princess Celestia responds to Dr. Fictus and his team arriving by torching them and the worms.

EDIT: Or maybe one where everyone finds out that Discord literally pulled a prank on Unit 227 because he had forgotten about it.

I don't usually leave comments on fanfics but I felt the need to put my two cents in here. This is by far one of, if not the most, unnerving stories I've read on Fimfiction. I have always focused on the horror and grimdark stories of this site and this is possibly my favorite. It put me on edge and even in the first few reports I felt tense like there was something off about what was happening. I can proudly say that I would recommend this story to anyone who has yet to read it.

Now I need a part two

Purge it with holy fire!

Great horror story and gives off Thing vibes.

I really enjoyed this one, it's a solid foreboding tale. The horror is pretty subdued and lets the reader do a lot of the legwork, which is always nice. I'd recommend you turning this story's rating down from M to T, both for viewership and because honestly there's nothing shown here that's so horrifying that we need to keep it M. Even the language is pretty tame, and the body horror descriptions are sufficiently superficial and clear to be enjoyed even by people who can't stand gore. Other than that, I had a good time with this story. Good job!

I really love this fic and the plot/concept/execution of it!! "Weird shit in the woods" is always a favorite of mine. However, a personal note I have about it is the switch to present tense in the final section. I know it was meant to show the the reader is in the present, but it reads a bit clunky and my personal opinion is that past tense would be more appropriate still (if only for ease of reading)

Overall, great work and keep it up!!!

I initially wrote it with the intention of it being rated T, but I decided it was better to be safe than sorry (specifically surrounding my depiction of Ironhide killing the deer). I'd rather someone go into a rated M story and find the amount of gore less than they expected than someone go into a rated T story and be hit with more violence than they were looking for.

Purge them in a cleansing with THE HOLY FIRE OF THE GODDESS OF THE SUN!!!

In all seriousness though, this is incredible. Simply terrifying. In one way, it's as if the the "magic" of Equestria is protecting all life inhabiting its realm. Meanwhile, the whole outside world is already "infected". This could've even been an open-ended complete story within its own right (that is, if you want to leave it like this).

This was pretty great! The only thing that would make it even better is if there was just more, expanded--because now I wanna know more about these worms... though I guess that's kind of the whole point, where you pretty much know what they do, but not what they are or where they came from.

Great work!

I disagree on how "gore" that particular scene that you describe is, but I suppose that it is subjective and it is true that different people have different limits to what they can endure comfortably. I can't really fault your reasoning there, and I must admit that it is nice reading a M-rated story that isn't blatantly porn. So I respect your choice.

Well that was an interesting concept!
And it spreads very effectively by touch. If they're in Canterlot, it may already be too late for... a LOT of ponies :applecry:
This has such incredible room for a sequel, but I feel like it won't get one :twilightsheepish:

Interesting tale, it has a very Lovecraft feel a la “At The Mountains of Madness.”

Общественность требует продолжение!!!

guess who has been replaced by a skin walker?

Very strong Annihilation movie vibes. Spoopy!

Loved the story, reminded me of Annihilation movie a lot. Was bit saddened they all died but it adds to the finallity of the problem.

this is really good, would love a continuation

a true work of art

Very creepy. Gives enough detail to draw one’s own conclusions, but without being specific enough to narrow down what is actually happening.

Plenty of unaffiliated adventurers have done the same, but none reported seeing any of what these poor researchers saw.

Either nothing happened, or all of those "adventurers" are now worms wearing a pony's skin filled with black goop.

I wonder if Daring Do is still Daring Do.

I think the "double appendage" thing is nature's answer against the worms. Think about it, getting infected by the worms is a surefire way to die and get replaced. So the creatures of the Undiscovered West evolved a defense mechanism to grow extra body parts that are not infected by the worms so they can shed or cut off the parts that ARE infected. Much like the cells in our own body replicate themselves to replace damaged or dead cells (don't quote me on this though, I'm not a doctor). If their whole body is infected, then I guess the "possum" situation happens where the animal grows a second/uninfected body and leave the first/infected body.

However, with the ponies of Unit 227, they don't have such defense mechanism. So the moment they are infected, they're basically a dead pony walking. If I had to guess, the only way to save them is to amputate the infected body part before it spreads to the rest of their body.
