Spikes loves Rarity so much that he's willing to die faster to be with her... That's not love man, that's called Codependency. And it's not healthy by any means...
Ok, fine. I don't want to say the story was bad, cuz it wasn't. But for a story to be truly sad or tragic there must be a reason to it. Not just make the characters miserable becuse you can do it. Either way, it was a good story. Just be more careful about it next time.

I appreciate your input, but try to put yourself in Spike's position. Rarity died around 500 years ago and Spike still has about another 500 years to go before he dies (though he will not have known how long he has). If you had been without your one love, never being able to get with anyone else, for that long how would you feel? On top of that, in "The Dragon and the Pony", it says he goes on living while he watches the generations of the clan live, grow old, and die while he changes very little.

My grandpa lost his wife 16 years ago and he's the happiest persons of his age I know (He's 87 btw) and has find love again. My aunt lost her husband more than 20 years ago, and yet not a day goes by without her enjoying being alive.
Ok, you say he was never able to find a new love. But why? Cuz you say so. Nothing more, nothing less. And that's totally fine. It's you're story after all. But it would really help your narrative if next time you could give us a more solid reason for the characters suffering.
PD: I did read The dragon and the pony. It was also a good and much more heartwarming story.
