Routine day with a dirt cheap brush, then a week goes by and it goes untouched. Then two, then three, then a month, and the rest of your life you beat yourself up. - Aesop Rock, "Rings"

Years before her enrollment at the School of Magic, Ocellus spent her larval stage in the Changeling Grotto Junior Military Academy.

She did better than one might expect.

This is an entry in the Snippet Series, an anthology of old oneshots that I (and my good buddy Str8aura) wrote based around interesting pics I found. New ones will be posted every other Thursday for the foreseeable future.

Tfw you're a literal baby and you get sent to baby boot camp for crying

I think I've seen that cover image somewhere before...

Oh heck, I’ve been noticed. I sourced your DeviantArt twice on the fic’s main summary page, like I do every artist whose works inspire a story in me. Hope you approve of the baby bug boot camp capers.

Chrysalis is not the most nurturing of matriarchs. And a story about toddlers doing army drills is more approachably absurd than one where children are sent to prey on ponies. An author needs to know his tonal limits.

Or something pithy like that. I dunno, pretend I edited this clip to have Oce and Phar’s funny faces on top of these characters.

I am very smart.

children sent to prey on ponies

In hindsight, this probably means the half finished story I told you about featuring Hitman Cozy Glow, but at the moment I'm reading a weird creepypasta and just finished a scene that features children chasing the MCs in a corn field, and reading that really threw me off my vibe. You fucked up the emperor's vibe. Unforgivable.

Amazing where you can find the seeds of change, even in that blighted soil. A lovely snippet indeed.

I’ve seen Holes memes, but not Holes itself. Ain’t that some recursive hooey.

As for the topic of believable killer kids, don’t sweat it. My “tonal limits” aren’t necessarily the same as yours. Moreover, the storytelling rules for Cozy Glow aren’t the same as the ones for Ocellus.

Tremble at the visage of this awful aberrant arthropod. Truly a force of evil in every stage of her life cycle.

You threw off the Emperor's grove? Send the space marines and guardsmen, they'll deal with you.

Hatchling 589 had no idea what a Griffon was, but being eaten was NOT on her to-do list. So through the mud she wriggled, praying to Queen Chrysalis that she'd go the rest of her life never having to see such a scary-sounding monster up close.

Hopefully Gallus never finds out about this, or he'll never let her hear the end of it. :rainbowlaugh:

"Bah," Pharynx waved her off and focused his attention on a beeswax calendar etched into the far wall. "Don't go spreading this little heart-to-heart around. Or next time I'll come at you as a dragon. And trust me, if you never meet a real dragon in all your life, you can count yourself as one lucky bug."

...guess it's good she's not that lucky then, eh? :trixieshiftright:

What direction was the hive heading in if softies like them were starting to pop up?

In short...a colorful one. :trollestia:

I never knew I needed to see that last gif until now. :rainbowlaugh:

Awww! This story was an instant fav of mine. I always like seeing Pharynx in a softer light

Very interesting take on Pharynx's views and attitude from even that long ago. A lot of authors—myself included—tend to soften his personality post-transformation for whichever headcanon of the day, but it's perhaps even more interesting to see, ahem, deviants of that, showing more depth to his pre-reformed self, too. :moustache:

The 'tough, willing warrior who brunts Chrysalis's turbulent rule to ultimately protect the other changelings' angle is definitely common too, and I love to see it. Pharynx was always portrayed as loyal to the hive, not necessarily to its current leader exclusively. I think it makes perfect sense that he'd accept Chrysalis as his queen, and be very strict and gritty, but not share her more deprived, villainous traits when it came to handling changelings.

Personally, I think Pharynx's thoughts towards and relationship with Chrysalis is one of the most interesting unexplored parts of his character. He had to be second in command, or at least far up the chain given his old role. They're similar in many ways, but Pharynx isn't selfish, which is probably the biggest difference.
