Thunder's adoption is an agreement between the presiding mistress and the citizen that she desires. While there is certainly a power dynamic where Spitfire is much wealthier and more powerful than Thunderlane, she also has an obligation once taking ownership of him to care for and love him. In my version of Equestria, slavery is more like an apprenticeship to judge if one is worthy of the immortality that can be granted by Equestria's rulers. If they can be obediant adn loving, then they can continue to love and exist in this perfect world.
Otherwise, ponies live in an idyllic and loving society. Social norms being what they are, perhaps you noted Thunderlane and Apple Fritter giving each other a smooch? A perfectly normal greeting.
I've rambled a bit now... but I think you for giving this story a chance, even if some of the fetishes aren't particularly up your alley.

It's fine, no harm done. I just spoke from a flash/hentai game, where you have to get a female slave obedient and can yo do it the old fashioned way with dominance, or caring and trusting approach by letting her choose things like food and clothes. I always took the latter, as I am a very sympathetic person.
Plus, my sympathetic side made me look down on most stories with things that are considered bad like slavery/fall of Equestria.
And the fact, I got a Unicorn mare OC who barely escaped a fate as sex slave
