This was good.
i loved the atmosphere of the setup, with Twilight grumpily losing a fight against the wind, and the cafés of Canterlot closing down ahead of the planned storm. The disguising cloak, and her temptation to make the café stay open to make her one more hot cocoa was a nice way to preview the themes of the story, which really come in strong with her parents addressing her as Princess, and treating her as an unfamiliar guest!
it makes sense as an extension of Amending Fences that Twilight's Canterlot life pre-friendship lessons would strain her relationships with more than just her friends, but her parents as well, and i can definitely see this kind of strain taking hold, with her parents just not knowing how to relate to this child prodigy who was destined for greatness beyond their understanding ever since she got her cutie mark. it's nice to the beginnings of the mending, and picking up where their parent-child relationship left off in her foalhood was cute. thanks for the story!
Really sweet story, with a really interesting concept! I've read plenty of stories where Twilight's parents are super proud of her and her brother, usually appearing as one-off side characters to bring a heaping dose of embarrassment (similar to RD's parents, in a way). While that is, of course, fitting, this different interpretation is so different! It's very easy to imagine that Twilight's relationship with her parents was strained during her fillyhood, and that the additional distance of alicornhood would fracture the weak link they had remaining.
It's really cathartic watch watch Twilight mend this relationship, as well. Bike brought up Amending Fences, but I'm also reminded of Canterlot Wedding - in both cases, Twilight neglected her relationships and allowed them to sour over time. It's so nice to see her put her friendship training into practice and bring her family back together :) contrary to popular belief, familial relationships require upkeep, too! Being related isn't enough to keep a friendship alive. Thanks for the story!
