The Sleepless Beholder

I just headbutt the keyboard till my ideas spill out into writing. Sometimes it works.

T

Daring Do, famous adventurer and secret writer under the name A.K. Yearling, has been traveling under the disguise of the jungle to the temple of Ta Ponyhm, searching for a legendary artifact; The Golden Mirror. And if the temple wasn’t enough, she’s also been hunted by a terrible cult leader named Luddic Path and his followers. But a new package of trouble gets added up as she is captured by a unicorn magician.

Daring continued to struggle against her bonds. “Trixie, wait, if you two fight you may destroy the city!”

“Sacrifices must be made!”

“That includes your wagon.”

Trixie’s determination faded “Oh… crap.”

:rainbowlaugh: gotta love Trixie priorities

kinda disappointed they didn't hook up, or at-least get a jealous rainbow scene

Maybe they can have another adventure someday, one that can make it to the public :rainbowlaugh:

“What?! But- What did you threw into the sky then?”

“Just an old metal tray.” Trixie’s smug smile was legendary. “Fooling a bunch of cultists and a veteran explorer with a simple illusion is child’s play for The Great and Powerful Trixie!”

I've always said better to be clever than powerfull:trixieshiftleft:

It's fun to see Trixie outsmart everyone to leave Daring Do gobsmacked

I love this story and you got both main character right. Not one of them was personality wise flanderized.

Though you made Trixie more capable then she ever was in the show. We know Star Light can do all those things but Trixie did show progress of her magic abilities in the episode. "Road of friendship."

Yeah, this is intended as happening after those events so her magic has improved.

Glad that i could get the characters right, especially Daring since I don't write her often

Ahhh, the dynamic between the two mares was fantastic!

I did also feel that Trixie was a bit more potent than I had been expecting, but it did seem on par with her general progression and within her choice of skillset as a traveling magician.

Thank you for the laughs! <3

The adventure is a bit short but honestly...It's amazing.

First off, I would like to say I love how badass Trixie ends up being in the last chapter. That's not something we see a lot. I was chuckling at her priorities bits honestly.

Daring comes natural to her character. I don't really have much to say in that term but let me point out that her frustration in her interactions with Trixie is felt. Like, literally!

As I said, the adventure itself isn't that grand but the interactions between the characters is written so well that it just rubs the whole thing with a homerun.

the antagonist isn't that cool though. Or at least I don't get the feel for them. Just saying.

Glad you enjoyed it! It was really fun writing these two together, and yeah, Trixie deserves some badassery.

As for the antagonist, yeah, I was expecting to write more of him later on, but that got shelved at the end.

Very interesting setup here. I never would have thought to put Trixie and Daring Do together, and it is so believable for Trixie to "wiggle" herself into this situation.

However, I do admit I wish there was like a bonfire/campfire scene with Trixie and Daring where the two can actually connect, rather than Daring literally having no choice but to deal with her.

Overall, the characterization for both Trixie and Daring feels very genuine.

This chapter has a lot going on in it, from the temple, to Trixie and Daring Do's relationship/tolerance of each other, and the traps associated with a temple of this nature.

However, I must admit it felt short. The temple scene moves so quickly from trap to trap, I don't feel as invested in the dangers of our heroes. I also thought the charactization for Dating, espicially near the end doesn't really fit her whole motto of "I work alone."

Overall, I enjoyed the chapter and look forward to seeing out it plays out.

This last chapter was full of action, as it should be considering how it is the climax of this little adventure. I really admired how you made Trixie out to be a total badass, but it kind of let Daring Do with nothing to do but her usual shtick of being captured by the bad guys.

Also, the villain was really a let down, his presence is all throughout the story but he doesn't really come off as threatening. Espicially when he's so easily coated by our heroine.

I really enjoyed the aderaline rush this chapter gives, but I really do wish there had been more but for what's here, I'm glad I had a chance to read it.

“Oh, so The Great and Powerful Trixie has captivated the heart of the great adventurer to the point that she admires Trixie from afar?”

“What? No. I’m not interested in you,” Daring protested.

The unicorn dismissed her with a hoof. “Oh, there’s no need to deny it. There's no shame in ogling a beauty like Trixie.”

i love this already, Trixie is always so fun!

“You’re friends with Rainbow Dash?”

“Her existence occupies a place in Trixie’s mindscape. And nothing else.”

both a perfect way for Trixie to describe it and also an accurate one!

Daring gave a little shrug and put her hat next to Trixie’s before going to sleep.

i love this mental image, very cute!

How full of yourself do you have to be to try and wiggle your way into somepony’s story?

if anypony can do it, it's Trixie!

Daring's hoof hit her face. “Great. They fly now.”

that would definitely be my reaction!

“I said I get it. It’s like your way of remembering all those things lost in the action before they fade away from memory and no pony ever knows about it. Adventures would feel empty if you didn’t have a way to tell them to others, right?”

aww, do like this little insight

“Not every trap survives years without maintenance.” Daring walked to the axe and gave it a kick before looking at the floor, pointing at a tile that had sunk in the ground. “Pressure plates, be careful where you stand.”

ha! love the trope subversion

“That’s because I have to censor our encounters so the books can be published to the general audience,” Daring explained.

ooh, love this metafiction bit

“Well, Trixie would prefer to remain un-ridden.”

phrasing!

“You are actually quite light,” Daring admitted.

canon. and classic ship-tease scenario, love it!

“Glad to be of help.” Trixie closed her eyes and got some rest while Daring continued her way into the jungle.

and this was a really fun original pairing, to be certain. classic ridiculous Trixie / hapless "straight mare" who has to keep her out of trouble, with the wrinkle of Trixie being a unicorn and thus overpowered for what her skill level should be, as pointed out in the title

Everypony besides Trixie had their jaws close to the floor.

hahaha, perfect callback to the alicorn amulet!

“Trixie didn’t know it had magical power! She thought it would be a nice gift for Starlight.”

aww,i love this! so cute! agh!

Daring continued to struggle against her bonds. “Trixie, wait, if you two fight you may destroy the city!”

“Sacrifices must be made!”

“That includes your wagon.”

Trixie’s determination faded. “Oh… crap.”

hahaha!

Daring paused. “One? There are others?”

haha, fun little glimpse! Trixie's not the only mare here used to the world revolving around her

“I have an important question to ask.”

agh, my heart! this was a really fun and funny romp, mixing the two very different worlds and using all of Trixie's talents to make her unreasonably effective in Daring Do's context. but i certainly didn't expect you to end it with making me squee unreasonably for this beautiful bit of StarTrix at the end! just a really fun read all around. thank you!

Aw. This was disastrously cute. And I mean that literally and figuratively. I never imagined a story with Daring Do and Trixie would work this well. I mean, an adventurer and illusionist. Did anyone think that it'd ever go well?

Trixie's priorities are well skewed in this one lol, was funny to read certain parts. And eventually when she comes in clutch it didn't come as a surprise to me - Trixie can be amazing at times. All in all, a cute and funny story, one that I'd be interested in reading more.

Really, it has been a fun ride. So many things that I wanna comment on, and many different aspects of the story that was a really fun part to read. Thank you so much for the story, it was excellent.

Howdy, hi!

This fic was super fun. I love the dynamic between Daring and Trixie. The setup and payoff in this fic are also absolutely golden. I love how much this fic also shows up what makes Trixie unique. Her tricks, her craftiness, and her adaptability without making Daring hold the idiot ball. I also love the last-second romance setup at the end. Noice.

It was comedic and fun and just thoroughly enjoyable for the entire duration of the fic. You also write just an absolutely stellar Trixie. My only thing is I did notice a few typos throughout the fic, but they were overall minor.

The biggest strength I have to say about this fic is actually the setup. The small details that accumulate into the ending that ends on a very Trixie finish are really well done.

Thank you very much for the read!
