In Middle-Earth the sun and moon are controlled by two Maiar named Arien who guides the sun and Tilion who guides the moon. The Sun and Moon were made from a fruit and flower from the Two Trees of Valinor. The Two Lamps of Almaren were the biggest light sources ever made in Arda (Earth). Their destruction cause the breaking of the lands into Aman in the West, Middle-Earth in the middle, the Land of the Sun in the East, and the Dark Land in the Southeast. The Two Trees of Valinor lit up Aman. The Sun and the Moon you already know.
