Recursive fanfic of vdrake77’sThe Changeling of the Guard.’ TCOTG/Power Ponies/Into the Spiderverse fusion fic.

Idol Eyes, sidekick to Maretropolis’ most toxic villain, “The Bugisher,” does not dream of greater things. Regardless of what schemes his employer might put into practice, Idol has never truly believed that his efforts could change his life for the better. Unbeknownst to our villain, however, a reckoning is coming, and Idol Eyes will soon be forced to learn the art of self-improvement.

One way or another.

Well I say that this is one good story but I'll leave other people to criticize your work.

Heh.

Nicely done.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a story in the featured box with less than ten votes.

This. Is an absolute delight. It's got that feeling I always try to maintain in my chapters and it left me with a big smile. Great job!

Yeah, tell me about it. I saw the fic made the popular listings, and I was just like, "this can't be right"

Thanks for reading!

Very good job, I feel like you really captured Idol's tone well!

FTL

Again you have done a quite creditable version of the Idol Hooves that almost everyone has come to love.

Good feel, suitable whimsy and even if, like me, you are not familiar with most of the cross-over sources, the story still sufficiently holds itself together and remains enjoyable and entertaining. One more up vote for you.

Well, I'll never turn down an upvote.
Thank you for the kind words!

This was very on point with canon Idol. It was a really good read. Double :moustache::moustache: for your effort.

This is rife with medium awareness, and I love it.

The storyline was really well-written, too.

“The same as it is every night, Idol…” replied Topaz, slinging a hoof over his shoulder and sweeping the other dramatically across the city’s skyline visible through the window. "... try to take over the world"

Idol,Idol and the Bug-bug-i-i-sher

Found this a lot of fun, staying consistant to both the Show and the Fanfic. The Comic-verse is a pretty good concept as well, and I'd certainly be interested in seeing a little more of it.

“I am a changeling of simple taste,” Idol Hooves admitted. “I prefer my food wriggling and my moral quandaries solved.”

This is the most perfect Idol Hooves quote to have ever been written. Congrats.

Thank you for the kind words! :) I'm glad people seem to be enjoying the fic.

Glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment!

Okay, someone needs to make additional stories for the other Idols because I can't stand the idea of these awesome characters only showing up once.
I especially want to know how Human-Idol became a vampire.

If anybody wants to, they're more than welcome! Vdrake always seemed fine with recursive fanfiction, and I certainly don't care

...but I don't think I'll get around to it myself, to be honest.

Still, in the back of my mind, I was thinking that most of the Idols had an adventure involving the cup from the temple.

For Idol Threat, it created a magical-girl-esque contract between him and the Alicorn of fire.

For Isoptera, I was thinking that she went to architecture school disguised as a pony, but had her true form revealed in some misadventure involving the cup. (She was nearly finished with her architecture degree, though, so in her universe, the changeling hive is one of the wonders of the world, and a popular tourist destination)

For Gatherer Drone, I figured he probably met Chrysalis in the temple.

For Skyphos, I figured the adventure where he found the cup was where he learned the true meaning of friendship and became a changedling.

And for Idol Hands, I thought he probably came across the cup at an art exhibition hosted at Crystal Prep. And like Idol Eyes (Idol Sequence) the cup cursed him. In Hands' case, turning him into a vampire.

I really enjoyed this. I like how you gave the comic book world its own life and rules. I love that some readers come in as villains--it's a gentle reminder that life outside comic books is more complicated. I adore the new-but-familiar relationship between Topaz & Idol. Thanks for writing.

Thanks for reading : D

Wonderful bit of metafanfic. I do love parallel universe shenanigans, and the idea that the comic book world's inhabitants are both aware of transformed readers and try to accomodate their visits as best they can is a delightful concept. The entire pantheon of Idols was well-crafted as well. (Hands raises some fascinating questions about the human world.)

Thank you for a delightful read.

Thanks for reading ^_^

So, I noticed a bit of a pattern as I was reading this, and perhaps the defeat clause isn't quite as random as it first appears:
Idol Threat never actually self-actualized, but helped Idol Hands see that his powers are meant for good, rather than evil or righteous crusading under the facade of good.
Gatherer Drone self-actualized with very little outside help, but in doing so helped plant the seeds for Isoptera to actualize by expressing pony emotion in a changeling way.
Hands allowed Isoptera to come to terms with her ascension fully by providing a mirror for her to reflect on, both literally and philosophically, equally finalizing his own growth.
Isoptera asked the leading question to allow Idol Eyes to guide Skyphos to self-actualize.
This chain closes off with Skyphos reflecting and planting the seeds for Eyes to actualize.
Idol Hooves, the OG buggy stallion himself, in his own fully actualized state, allows Idol Eyes to come to terms with his acquired bugginess and become Idol Sequence.
Each Idol leaves as they do something critical to help someone else reach their own actualization.

I... totally did all that on purpose, yes, I'm a genius!

...honestly, though, I was pretty tunnel-focused on the mechanics of it all during writing, which I had planned out as this:

-Threat is sent home when Hands realizes his powers can be used for good (incidentally, "I must use my vampire for good" was one of my favorite lines from the unfinished Twilight the Musical).

-Gatherer Drone is sent home when Isoptera feels first hand his dispassionate devotion to his hive (something like the agape concept from Ancient Greece) and starts to realize that concepts like love and hatred aren't as simple as the surface level emotions that they produce.

-Idol Hands gets sent home when Isoptera realizes that becoming Changedlings could be beneficial to her hive. (She's a queen, and she tries to be a good one, so she spends more time in self-reflection than the average Idol, so she contributes more than her share towards the epiphany quota).

-Isoptera gets sent home when Idol Eyes realizes that the spell has changed.

-Skyphos does indeed get sent home by his own self-actualization. Realizing something important rolls the dice to send one of the Idols home, and in his case, the proverbial life Skyphos saved was in fact his own.

-And, yeah, you're right on the money with Idol Hooves being sent home after Idol Eyes self-actualized.

The rest of the plot and dialogue decisions were mostly made at whim, but your interpretation is entirely valid. Just because I wasn't consciously putting something into the story doesn't mean it wasn't there. I decided on the order they'd go home at what I thought was random, but I certainly didn't roll a die or anything, and death of the author is certainly a thing.

Anyway, glad you like the story. Thanks for the comment! : )
