Set just before Tirek's debut.
Many stories of old tell of a centaur named Tirek who stole the magic of others in an attempt to take over all of Equus. Tirek and Scorpan were so close, they were in many ways more like brothers. Such stories tell that Tirek was so strong, that it took Tirek's dear friend, Scorpan, betraying him and telling Celestia and Luna of his plans. Tirek vowed that eventually he would escape his prison in Tartarus and finish what he started.
However, the stories tell that Tirek is the last of his kind, yet right beside him in the darkest part of Tartarus is another centaur. Asmund was imprisoned alongside Tirek, for fear of him following in the older centaur's hoof prints. The two lived beside one another, silently waiting for and opportunityof escape after Asmund willingly sacrifices his magic to Tirek in exchange for Asmund escaping with him. With their deal bound by blood, Tirek escapes with Asmund in tow. Perhaps with so much time spent beside each other, their little oath could turn into something more.

The reason for the time skip is that I believe the wendigos were banished far south. Asmund can't can't really use magic to get there because Discord can sense magical disturbances.
The reason Asmund is going after other creatures isn't that he wants to, he needs the wendigos to be strong to attack Equestria and they feed off hate.
Also, keep in mind that at this point Asmund has spent almost all of his life in Tartarus with Tirek as a roommate. That changed him. The griffons, dragons, and ponies are means to an end. The end of the princesses.

The mane 6 only had one sign, it was a little chilly. The storm in the next chapter is meant to be a sudden, "Oh shit," moment. Twilight was the only one who saw the snow because she was actually going towards the wendigos.
Again, he isn't in the right mind. 1500 years in Tartarus with a roommate who constantly fed into his hate didn't really help with his mental health. It's actually why he wasn't so obsessive after chapter two. Asmund and Tirek had escaped and were actually talking about things other than plans. They were friends! At least until Tirek was defeated, then it was back to his obsessions.

To avoid spoilers, I'm only gonna say one thing. Technically, it was only griffons and dragons. I chose those two because both have a reputation for having trouble with friendship. It would be easiest to explain these two species fighting each other.

Okay. Thanks for telling me this. So, once Asmund eventually finds a way to free Tirek. He should feel extreme remorse on what's happening with the Griffons, and Dragons. And he did doom part of the world to the Windigos, so he can't just ignore that part. I mean, what he is doing to the Non-Ponies or the land is NO BETTER than what Celestia and Luna did to him many years ago.
He might not care for the Ponies, or even the Mane Six. But, he should care about the other Non-Pony Creatures?

Okay. Even though Celestia and Luna deserve for what's coming. Having Asmund going after the innocent Non-Ponies of the Griffons, Dragons, even the Pony Populace themselves. Even hurting or tricking the Mane Six that COULD potentially sympathize with him is rather a Dick Move on his part.
