The story was okay.
The only issue I had was with the ending. Changelings don't just enter a comatose state if they're cut off from the hive mind. Sure, they'll be confused, but not sent into a coma.

The word you're looking for is were. “Were” is simply a plural past-tense form of the verb “are.”
