Huh. This doesn't seem to be going anywhere near the direction I originally thought. I was fully geared for some Raymond Reddington/Hannibal Lecter grade mindfuckery from Zenith as he toyed with everyone's minds. Instead, this seems to be legit marriage counseling in a slice-of-life fic.

He's both. More like you'd have to put yourself in his shoes. If you were him, what would be the best outcome? How would you get everything you want with what you have? He does want to get closer to Cadance as a individual but he also needs her for food as well. Shining is in the way for a multitude of reasons, so he has to get rid of him one way or another... To him there isn't a good or bad. It's for his and his kin so they can survive. So is there really a good or bad?
Also you do still have to take into account that his mind is undergoing changes due to the mentality he has to take to rule over his race.
