Spoilers for S8 E15 The Hearth's Warming Club

After all the fuss has died down, Twilight and Rainbow tell their friends everything that went down while they were out.

Their reactions are a lot more . . passionate than they expected.

I like this story, alot

The episode raised a good amount of questions and not just about Gallus. Though one wonders why Gallus, an orphan, was sent to the friendship school and why Grandpa Gruff was the one to bring him. It also begs the question of how Gilda, Gabby and Grandpa Gruff are related. Are Gilda and Gabby sisters or cousins? What relation was the griffion chick? How does Ocellus' family work, do changelings have normal family structures, did they before reformation or only after? Where the adults her parents and the foals her siblings? Did changelings always have gender or is it a new thing for them? We know Silverstream's whole family, and that Yona and Sandbar have traditional families. Does Griffionstone have a orphanage, if it was as run down as the rest of it could you really identify it? How do changeling families work?

9094207
I know! It's officially one of my favorite episodes! So many questions!

9094207
I think they dumped Gallus on the school because griffons are assholes and figured throwing away a useless orphan would be good enough to make Twilight stop nagging them to become more 'friendly.' The other questions on family structures are valid, though.

Well, there's one thing they don't have to worry about. There is no Griffon Empire, since that would imply griffons have a government or society rather than being a bunch of miserable squatters pecking at the corpse of a once-great nation. Damn vultures. (Is that racist?)

9094207
Jim Miller mentioned on Twitter that Grampa Gruff is Gallus' "guardian". That's probably why he brought him to the school himself.

9094207
Changelings having traditional families would make a lot of sense now. Normally a queen would provide the children, but since Thorax is a guy (or he’s just not into the whole mating thing yet) it would make sense for Changelings to choose their own lovers (also, there’s more love that way). Also, as for the gender thing, I’m pretty sure everyone had a gender (drones were guys, workers were girls, I believe), it was just hard to tell since Changelings always tried to blend in.

9095064
I REALLY want an episode surrounding the Student 6! I thought they would get more of the limelight, but apparently not.

I wanna hug Gallus soo much, poor birb boy :fluttercry:

9095238
There's quite a lot about Season 8 we thought would be better. Instead we have a bunch of great new characters we hardly ever get a chance to see and a school that consistently demonstrates that Chancellor Neighsay was right about everything and the girls have no right to run an institution. And lots of terrible character regression.

9095262
Not to mention how most of the Mane 6 have other jobs which will take up most of their time.

I thought that as well as students, they would also introduce a couple of characters we already know as substitutes; Moondancer in particular comes to mind. Failing that, there was a perfect opportunity to introduce older ponies as teachers.

Hearth's Warming Club is, so far, the only story centered around the Student 6. We don't see much of them, but, by the end of the season, they will be saving the world/school along with the CMC. I can cheer on the CMC and Gallus, but the others I'm just not invested in.

Sandbar, despite seeming like a chill pony, is enrolled in friendship school, so there has to be something wrong there. Smolder is incredibly competitive and blunt. Yona is loud, brash and clumsy. Silverstream is excitable, but spent most of her childhood in hiding. Ocellus probably helped out in the Changeling Invasion. Gallus is an orphan with abandonment issues.

All these things are really interesting, but are never brushed up on, and it's a waste of characters.

"What can we do? Gallus is part of the Griffon Empire. If we try to keep him here, we could get into a lot of political trouble."

Only if someone from Empire loudly declare that he/she doesn't like it and the root of the problem here is exactly lack of guys who care. Of course somebird may try to use it in political game, but it can probably be settled after figuring out what he/she really wants.

Another sad thing about Gallus is that he is about 15 years old, most fictional orphans are younger and it's all happily ever after, the thing is it's often not and teens are moody enough (we all are/were) and him having nothing is really depressing. He went through basic childhood and although still legally a minor he's no little kid (or baby which most would adopt) anymore but a teen.

9096022
See, the main problem with Gallus is that he is not technically part of the Pony Area of Equestria, he is from the Griffon Kingdom and is over there for studies. Because of this, there is not much the Mane 6 can do, at least politically.

You're right, I don't know how old Gallus is exactly, but he seems to be somewhere between preteen and young teen. Which means he spent almost his entire life on the streets. Aaaaaand I'm crying again.

Seriously, can everyone in the fandom just write some more stories about this poor sad birb? I would seriously appreciate that.

Oh yeah no doubt and Twilight herself now that the series canon is (by my mathematics) in it's 4th year (I think some seasons had a little overlap as did many episodes and this Hearths Warming story may be centred on it but it is not the day, I had Christmas events at school for example) and Twi came off too me as 17 (with the others being 17 to 20, I think Dash left home at 16, legally can where I live... her folks drove her mad!) in episode 1 they'd all be too young.
But your right, there is no Bradjolena as yet in the series... bad joke.

He's a good kid and Sandbar's folks live in town, if I were his dad and knew one of my sons best friends was like that I'd mentor him if needed. But they come off as 15 or 16 too me... the CMC are around 12-13 now. Sorry for that!

I'm sure they will, that episode will make him the new Scootaloo, there was a time of depressing orphan stories of her. I've seen more stuff of him shipped!

9096364
I have no idea how old the Mane 6 are but I usually guess based on their jobs. Fluttershy, Rarity and Applejack run a business, Pinkie works at a bakery, Rainbow is a stunt flyer/military and Twilight is a politician.

I think they're mid to early twenties going by that. We know from Forever Filly that they are aging, so that's nice.

Nice story though I have questions. Mostly with what the episode itself provided. If he truly has no family then who the back is paying up for his school supplies, amenities, food supply budget, and his freaking tuition?

I mean in real life schools, be they private, public, or academic based schools they USUALLY do background checks to consider if they are fit to attend, are able pay, and are aware the guidelines their child will have to bide by.

9096960
I got the impress they were in their late teens in episode 1 and the show indicates that was a little over 4 years ago now. I think Dash was 17 as one can leave home at 16 where I live (and do other crazy stuff as well!) and a years and a bit later (seasons 1&2) in season 3 joined the Wonderbolts as it's a quasi military unit which again the joining age is 17 with full operational status at 18 and from my name you can tell I know a little of aviation. One can work at a bakery as an apprentice at almost any age and have seen some young geniuses with their own businesses. Sides there may be a gap between them and the CMC but gaps can only be so much and they came off as what8 or 9 in season 1?

Yeah early 20s for all of them now I'd say at most.

9096962
Grandpa Gruff, from what I can see. He did call himself Gallus' guardian.

I don't know if you've noticed, but the S.O.F is set up in a very weird way; no training for teachers, teaching social constructs, poor quality substitutes. It's not impossible they didn't do any background checks.

9097215
I think the oldest is twenty eight tops, but there's also this;

Being a fan of Game Theory, I have made careful note of certain dates. You ready to crunch some numbers?

Okay, assuming that at the start, they are eighteen, the time when you are considered an adult, at least where I am from, then in the first two seasons alone, they are in their early twenties.

First off, we need to set the time for MLP's pilot. The Summer Sun Celebration is basically the Summer Solstice, so the pilot is set in June. With that out of the way, we can now move onto our next giant clue; Apple Bucking Season. Apple's are usually right for picking or bucking from September to mid October. I'll say it's just the beginning of it, for sanitys sake. So, in the first season, three months have already passed.

Then the next episode, Winter Wrap Up, which takes place at the end of Winter, ie, January. That's four months, so we are now at seven. Then we have Fall Weather Friends, where the Running of the Leaves is used to pull the leaves out of the trees for Winter, so it's set in September. 8 months between that and Winter Wrap Up, and we now have 15 months; or one year and three months.

Then we have Hearthswarming which is basically Christmas, so three more months; one year and six months. Then, sometime between the Mmmystery on the Friendship Express and Baby Cakes, Mrs Cake fell pregnant, so nine months added to that. We then see Super Speedy Cider Squeezy, and Cider Season begins at January, so we missed two more months.

2 years and 11 months, which means by then, the Mane 6 are already twenty years old.

I know I'm over analyzing, but I love math so much.

9097769
Well done and I concur! I can't put it so easily into words as you but using basic events did it somehow in my head.
I can see that the series can be a little out of sync and there seems too be a little overlap as with the Hearthswarming episodes. But yeah 3 years roughly or maybe a little more, season 8 is taking a little more then the others and 3 was almost nothing.
I think Dash with her nature and desire too escape her folks (who the f**k wouldn't?) may have left at the earliest legal age and that's 16 where I live and joined the Bolts at 17 and a bit (had my health not fouled up I'd have gone for the RNZAF) and was display flying at 18 (full operational age).
Then Gallus and the others are 13 too 15 I'd say. The CMC 12 or so. And I'd say Big Mac is about 22-24 as I think something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Md9_JJdsso happened and resulted in him and Bright Mac and Pear Butter/Buttercup were shown as very young and barely legal too marry and just 18-19, then a gap and AJ and a BIG gap and little Bloom came along and they died in some way.

As for Gallus, I'd say the Griffins are opening up too the world and seeing old orphans as a blight shoved him off, they'd probably not care if a pony family took him in, just see him gone as a tax saving!

Yeah all 19-22 by now, even Glimmer I think.

9097970
Out of all of them, the CMC are far and away the hardest to nail down in terms of age.

We kind of know that they're old enough to help out at the school, and, going by forever filly, are definetly teens. I go off the assumption they all met when they were ten (assuming they are the same age, Apple Bloom is apparently old to get her cutie mark, while Rarity implies it's normal for Sweetie, so she may be younger that Bloom.)

I think, roughly, oldest to youngest for Student 6 are;

Sandbar, Yona, Smolder, Gallus, Silverstream and Ocellus.

I also think that Gallus is the fastest flyer, because of his color pallet and anatomy, but that's just me.

9098050
I'd say they are 13 by now. Still kids but also past little girls.

Their jobs there are rather informal so a 13 year old would get away from it.

Yeah Ocellus comes off as 12-13 and the others 14-15 too me but with little gap and the difference in months at most.

Speed in an aircraft is as much about aerodynamics and power efficiency rather then raw power so yeah,

9098086
It's just- I got really into the anatomy of everything, and I've drawn some headcanons from it;

Pegasi Magic is what makes Pegasi fly. This is why without that magic (Tirek) they couldn't fly and why their wings are so small in porportion to their bodies.

Griffons are the fastest flyers, hands down. I don't care how fast RD is, biologically the Griffons are actually faster. They have bigger wings, and no magic, and the lack of mane means less drag, same with the long tails, the fur on the end is actually a good steering mechanism. Plus they have claws and beaks, all things that can reduce drag by a fair bit compared to ponykids blunt hooves and muzzles. Dragons stand upright, so there's more area and more buffering. Griffons are faster.

When I realized Gallus' color scheme was based off the Wonderbolts, I tried to see how fast he was, but the closest I could get was watching the time he flew around the Castle of the Two Sisters. I tried comparing that to Castle Mania, but no go, they kept cutting away so I couldn't do anything. Shame. I know he's fast though.

9095846
Griffons are very proud creatures, from what we've seen so far. If they were to try and make Gallus a member of Equestria, then they would have to explain their reasons for this. I don't think Griffons take kindly to criticism, and if they disagreed with them, they could demand Gallus back just to prove a point- I don't think they're above doing that out of pettiness

9098214
Out of wanting something in return :rainbowlaugh:
Sack of bits plus a tiny bit of blackmail plus some skillful negotiations would probably solve that problem nicely.

9098153
Hey I'm an Asperger nit-picker, so I know the feeling, just bad at expressing it.

She does have the physicality element in her though but I'd have too see it in the show. I'd say she's a bit like a jet/rocket hybrid fighter the British tried in the 1950's, very fast bursts and pretty good maintained speed but at said speed slower then basic jets.

Who knows and off topic, I've seen some odd things in aviation and I've seen some varied stuff fly that is over 100 years old too today.

Maybe, where did they say it? I've seen it, maybe he'd be the first Griffin bolt?!

9098377
True, though it depends who they're negotiating with

9098901
I'm a high functioning autistic, so hello there!

Who is the she your referring to? If it's Rainbow, then there's no way she's that fast going off her physique. Instead, I think she's like Twilight, and has an overabundance of Pegasi Magic. She is possibly the strongest Pegasi around because of this.

Most of the Student 6 were meant to be Expy's of the Mane 6 with new different quirks, for example;
Sandbar; AJ
Ocellus; Twilight Fluttershy
Silverstream; Pinkie Pie
Gallus; Rainbow

Unlike every other Griffon, Gallus' colors are unnatural, and line up perfectly with the Wonderbolts Uniform- blue with a yellow stomach and chest, and yellow lightening bolts at the feet. Gallus is blue with a yellow chest and stomach, and has yellow claws at his feet. It was weird, and everyone was really confused when they saw the unnatural colors.

In School Daze, when flying around the castle, Gallus shows he is a fast and agile flyer, crossing from one side of the castle to another in seconds when it took the Mane 6 twenty two minutes, give or take for cutaways and freaking out.

9099235
Common here!

Rainbow, just said an added extra.

They are.

Recessive genes, my dog has that with her markings.

That is normal for them too do, freak out.

Yikes your a little too deep!

9099329
I can't get out, please help :derpyderp1:

9099364
Trust me, I can be worse! I love Derpy by the way! I remember the Soccer Mom thing and being a bit like her I can assure you I did not find it offensive as it made me think "I know your issues". And it's not like they totally blamed her, she meant well.

9100207
I am neutral towards Derpy; I don't love her, I don't hate her. But I can see where the parents were coming from, especially with her voice, low and slow, and sounding very similar to the voices used for dumb characters on shows.

Fun fact; the voice actor for Derpy thought she was a guy, which is why it was low

9102637
Have a sort spot but it's no big deal. Just get the joke and know she's not like many I know.

Heard that!

9102965
So; she became so popular because of an animation error, and became controversial because of a voicing error.

Well then. She's just the embodiment of errors

9103845
Pretty much and as I've gone through her issues sympathised.. and them became a symbol of censorship.

9104176
Yup, sounds about right.

Though I believe in this case, the fandom was more at fault

9104183
None found it offensive, I didn't (I related).

I think we should leave it at this.

9104187
Well obviously someone did, but anyways;

Favorite Mane 6 character?

9104518
Someone's mom.

Don't think that way or basically I don't have favouritisms, but I am quite sympathetic too Scoolaloo as my health gives the same issue she does. I have though I have met real life equivalents of several in real life... then one was also right out of Star Wars!

9104570
Of the Mane 6; Pinkie, Twilight
Of the CMC; Sweetie Belle
In general; Starlight or Gallus

9104675
Would probably date Twi.

But too be fair it's not in my philosophy too judge that way.

9105421
But too be fair it's not in my philosophy too judge that way.

Wait, what?

9105515
Favouritisms, I just don't think that way.

9106217
Hmm, okay then, any favourite episodes or ships?

9106473
Too many but I did enjoy the episode this was based on.

Most ships are silly too me.

9106498
I love this episode so much, good on the writers for actually directly acknowledging orphans instead of dancing around it like usual.

9106710
And the fact he is a 15 (or so) year old one even more. Usually it's a 6-8 one and they get their family... well he sort of does.

9096170
look up the fic why dont they want me by rated ponystar is (censored) amazing and gies way into the effects on gallus's pychi over being a orphan for so long (like lil kid) upside there was a orphanage (downside abusive caretaker where he prefered the streets)
