She's looking at you. Yes you. And she is judging you with her eyes. There is no escape.

E

Spike the Dragon, Princess Twilight Sparkle's Number One Assistant, takes it upon himself to save a pony.

He has no idea what he's in for.

Twilight is buried beneath her duties as a princess, an administrator, and as the head of a school. Sometimes, things get lost in the hectic shuffle, small, tiny, important things in desperate need of reassurance and comfort.

This is an entry in the Weedverse, but it is rather self-contained. It exists on a small, focused scale, a character drama between just a few souls.

She's seriously the closest inverse of Harry Potter, I'm telling ya right now, that's how they created Twilight XD 😄

But cool story so far. ^^

This Talespin concerns me. Already there's so much she has to fight against. But... I think I'll remain optimistic. She's found her way to a good place, to good ponies, and literally the best draggo there ever was. She has a bright future, I think. Not just in terms of her career. I think she has a real chance to be happy, and I hope we'll get some inkling of that moving forward.

Also: Spike is still best draggo.

Good so far! Continue!

"Being a rather large village, it was a wide, easy target to hit."

Yeah, Rainbow Dash tried to use that excuse the one time she flew into Twilight Sparkle's rear. It didn't end well.

“My mother and I, we’re not like normal pegasus ponies.”

Little dude, I know Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. You're going to have to strain to beat that.

“But I’m strange and unusual,” Talespin said, blinking and squinting. “My life is all about the secret I have to hide and my struggle to be normal. It defines my existence. What we do in the night must never come into the light, my mother says—”

Yeah, you have a tragic backstory. Let's go introduce you to Sumac. That'll make you feel normal in a hurry.

"Spike was going to save a pony."

"Yeah, first thing we're going to do is get you some sunglasses. Rainbow Dash shades, that is."
(insert 20% cooler joke here)

How hard could it be? What could possibly go wrong? Wringing his clawed hands together, he realised, a lot. A lot could go wrong.

I'm glad someone is self-aware, and knows to never tempt fate.

Huh, Night Glider's filly hm?

While Spike power-waddled down the packed-dirt lane, his tail bouncing in time to music that didn’t exist, he thought about his last Carnivores Helping Other Magnificent Predators meeting. Sometimes, the response to something cute, helpless and fuzzy was the irrepressible desire to take a bite of it and this, this was a beastly thing to try and live with. Of course Spike and his fellow members of C.H.O.M.P. would never follow through with this driving desire, but living with said compulsion was distressing, hence the need for a support group.

A giraffe you say... :pinkiegasp: IS IT GEOFFREY FROM TOYS R US?!!!!!!

9027563
Doubtful—he wouldn’t have been dressed nearly as well, given the straits Toys “R” Us has been in the last few years. :derpyderp1:

9027583
Yes, but I thought maybe it was a reference to that image of him in a suit in a empty store

I haven’t read this yet, but I can already tell I’m going to enjoy it

I popped open this story without checking the writer and wasn't aware of who's story it was until I saw Sumac's name pop up, lol.

Sooooo... If Spike is Twilight's number one assistant, then what exactly happened to Owlowiscious? Because he's her number two assistant. She even directly says that.

9028047
Unreliable narration happened.

Sometimes, a character will state something, believe something, or otherwise posit something that they believe is true. It makes it true to them.

So when Character X plainly states that they are Twilight Sparkle's Number Two Assistant, said statement will be subjectively true... from a certain point of view. :pinkiehappy:

9028763 It could be taken in a literal sense, as the literal second ever assistant... But at that point it's simply pedantic, and not worth it to argue the point any further.

Also, pegasus ponies in birdbaths will never stop being funny. That is all.

Somehow, Twilight, through her endless correspondence and communications, convinced parents to allow their foals to attend an untried, untested school that had been attacked several times. Then there was the fact that one of its students had been foalnapped in a daring raid in the first year of the school’s existence. The fact that he wasn’t in school at the time didn’t matter, the mere fact that he was a student was the primary talking point that the media loved to seize upon.

Don't forget that time Applejack and Rainbow nearly got their students killed because of a stupid pissing match. ...No, I'm not over that. :pinkiecrazy:

Seriously, though. It's nice to see Spike being able to throw his weight around when it counts. Though Twilight clearly isn't the only one with a habit of working too hard. And I suppose ponies aren't the only ones to have to sacrifice a childhood for their future. That saddens me a bit. Especially since at the moment, he doesn't seem to have an apprenticeship or anything. I get that he eventually will, but at the moment it still kind feels like he's sacrificing his childhood for Twilight's benefit instead of his own. Though I suppose he's not that beat up about it, so maybe I'm overthinking it.

Miss Kerning annoys me. I understand her value, but I sincerely hope not to have to deal with her very often.

Moondancer concerns me. I worry for her, but I suppose there are some experiences you never really come back from.

Talespin is going to have to be open about her nocturnal side at some point, or else hiding it will simply make things more difficult for her moving forward. Luckily, she's in probably the right place to be open about it.

Dammit. I forgot this was a new one and went to hit the next chapter button. I think I'm happier when I'm a few chapters back and can read several in one sitting. This is too cute to have to wait for.

I wonder if Ms Kerning became so uptight after years of bullying in the form of being called Ms Keming

He hesitated, his breathing heavy and hard, with his heart pounding against his ribs in a funky rumba beat that was in dire need of castanets for accompaniment.

Chic-chic-ky-boom!

Chic-chic-ky-boom!

Constance Kerning could be the most harsh sounding name coming out of a librarian I've ever heard. Constance Kerning! Gosh. Like a name already harsh (Constance) combined with an almost obscure typography term (Kerning) that you could theoretically be constant... gosh. It's so severe.

Yesterday, when he had shown her to her room, she had been downright delighted, but Spike wasn’t sure why anypony would be overjoyed to live in this dark, sunless place that some called the dungeon.

I wonder why that would be. Couldn't be one of the biggest features of the character in question. I'm sure it's not that.

I like watching Spike be a neurotic mess. Humanises him in a good way.

:rainbowlaugh: Oh, that’s a good one! I wish I could upvote it again.

Don’t get it? Go look up the meaning of kerning.

Then there was the fact that one of its students had been foalnapped in a daring raid in the first year of the school’s existence. The fact that he wasn’t in school at the time didn’t matter, the mere fact that he was a student was the primary talking point that the media loved to seize upon.

Damnit, Bakugo!

Tucked within the chifforobe, in a nest made from pillows and blankets, was Talespin, and she was all curled up into a fetal ball. She clung to a stuffed ursa minor that had glowing, twinkling stars, teeny, tiny celestial bodies that cast a pale, faint light, leaving her face freckled with motes of silver.

Hnnnnggggg. This is weapons grade cute and I pray fanart happens.

Well, seems Spike inherited more than just organizational skills from Momlight. Hello Neurotic Lizardbaby.

Interesting chapter poor Talespin she'll have to get used to talking to strangers otherwise she'll be er learn anything.. after everyone is a stranger when we first meet. The paranoid meeting the paranoid with Spike in the middle

The foals of Our Town

OH SHIT! That Night Glider. That didnt click for a bit.

Who drew this silhouette of Moondancer on the wall?

Oh jeez, Spike really needs some form of healthy emotional outlet.. Poor guy.

I like this lil story. Iz cute.

Moondancer... "I have candy"? Really? :facehoof:

9031231
Teacher, working in a school trying to gain the trust of students. Candy is used to inspire trust.

9031093

Who drew this silhouette of Moondancer on the wall?

🎶 Scaramouch, scaramouch will you do the fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning very, very frightening me
Gallileo, Gallileo,
Gallileo, Gallileo,
Gallileo Figaro - magnifico! :pinkiehappy:

Gnawing on his lip, Spike opened the door with as much care and stealth as he could muster. What he saw inside almost caused his heart to stop.

That's pretty dang cute.

Someone should have realized that attempting to keep Talespin's secret from the school management was not a good plan, but I'm not sure who that someone should have been.

Ah, poor Spike. This isn't going well. He's about to cook his GF, lol. :rainbowlaugh:

The character building is amazing. Everyone in this room needs help. Especially Moondancer. Good luck, Spike and Talespin!:moustache:

9031231

As you've just witnessed, Moondancer is not quite all there, due to a mix of being too smart for her own good as well as severe mental-emotional trauma from her kidnapping into a dark hell and replacement which allowed Ponyville to get kicked in the balls. Plus she was a total shut-in beforehand, anyway. I imagine she's not... GOOD, with children. Talespin has issues, but more or less she seems to act and think like a normal filly in regards to the Weedverse. Where Moony can get along with the likes of Sumac or Pebble fine, I imagine, due to the fact they're as much adults as they are impressionable young kids, Talespin is going to cause her to invoke things she's -read- about kids rather than knowing from experience how to deal with them.

Yay the filly is finding her place

Man, Spike has it rough. I feel for the guy, so I'm glad he got a win.

I tend to think while he'd never say it Spike's friends are his horde.

When in the timeline is this? ... there are mentionings of Sumac, and the Changeling abduction of Moondancer seems distant enough that she's not mentally unstable but still paranoid over it ... wonder if Talespin will meet Sumac and Co.

9033327
It clearly says it in the story if one pays attention to the small details.

9033335
This fox may have missed that, or just ka-derped on my memory. Sleep is getting a bit wonky lately due to ear infection.

I recall it's set between school years, as Twiley is dealing with registrations and such. And Sumac is experimenting with flight, so definitely post-year 1 for him.

No mentions of developments that happened later, such as ascended Sumac or Eterni-Twi, so definitely before Sumac was older than nine or ten.

9033327
9033335
This.
It is a bit fuzzy in my head as well, but the biggest clue is Sumac crashing a flying invention in chapter one. This means Sumac is in his teens and apprenticed to Vinyl, but is still before Olive got shipped off to become an Immortal Solar Guard.

9033356
9033361
It’s the year right after PTSSFFF if im correct. It’s second year.

What a sweet end

Very nice. Good definitions of the Spike/Twilight dynamic. Talespin is a cute character and I hope she pops up in more of the fics, even if its just a few little glimpses.

The retrospective here really ties the story together. And it's a good one.

Also we definitely need a Talespin-focused SoL story now. She is so precious.
