I'm not a horror fan. I'm very bad at not hiding behind a pillow, waiting for that horrible music that signals a surprise to stop playing
And although I may not like this story for what it contains, I can appreciate the thinking that goes into it. Words spun to creep you out, and yet pull you in at the same time; it's the place you know is dangerous, yet want to go to all the same. I can also appreciate the work required to make a story mysterious yet detailed at the same time, so there's that.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is this: I don't like like it, but I appreciate it. Does that make sense? I hope so. I have a thing about trying not to offend anyone.

That was quite the bite-sized lovecraftian-horror there. Very nice.

Nice. Kind of had elements of "The Thing". I really liked how it began to take over their minds right away. It spread and infected so quickly that it was terrifying. Very fun body horror. If there is a nitpick I have it's that Rarity succumbed almost immediately and part pf body horror is being aware of how grotesque and monstrous one is becoming. Being trapped inside a broken , sickened, or mutating body while still being able to understand the situation despite not being able to do anything about it. Still loved it, though. I thought it made it far scarier that in the span of probably .... what, 30 seconds to a minute, Rarity went from normal, dramatic Rarity to just a part of the beast. Also the last bit about the towering shadows of a burning Ponyville is great imagery. Loved it.

So is it that the creatures outside psychically affected her or that when she tried to grab Sweetie in her magic she, in a sense got infected?

The changing of Ponyville was accompanied by the arrival of the creatures briefly mentioned towards the end of the story.
Direct contact with Sweetie Belle, who was 'infected', happened to spread the change to Rarity.
However, the change would have eventually affected her regardless, by nature of the invasion.
Rarity's metamorphosis was inevitable.

Well, that's certainly an interesting idea.
The main problem with doing something like that, is that I'm very much out of the loop in regards to the newer seasons of MLP.
I've been mostly detached from the fandom (asides from checking up on some older stories I used to follow, and replying to comments) for quite a while now.
If I were to do something along those lines, I'd probably have to base it along a season 4-ish timeline.
But, maybe.
