Tale Swapper

“Too much sanity may be madness. And maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.” -Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Don Quixote

T

This story is a sequel to Myriad Thoughts

Sunset Shimmer thought she was going to lose everything. Instead, she gained far more than she lost. With her new family, deeper bonds with her friends, and a firm understanding of the Magic of Friendship, Sunset is ready to face the new year.

However, she really didn't expect some of the problems which would arise from having a new home and better friendships. Sure, the curfew is bothersome, her new little sister tried to frame her for a crime she didn't commit, and her new Grandma wants her to learn to shoot a rifle, but these issues are manageable.

The fact that her new life seems to have reignited her magic- which she didn't even think was possible- is more worrisome. The fact that the new magic has attracted the attention of the smartest girl at Crystal Prep further complicates matters. However, the real issue is that the new magic seems to want to be used- and is continuing to spread.

Sunset's starting to wonder if she'll ever get a break...

OMGOMGOMGOMG. YAYAYAY
SEQUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love this. You made the charecters perfect. I can't wait till the Friendship Games start.

And now for mandatory MOAR:flutterrage:please :fluttershysad:

Sweet! wasn't expecting a sequel so soon and already off to a good start. Loved your first story, though it has effectively ruined Anon-a-miss fics for me XD.

Great start to the sequel! I love how everyone is and that they're managing their healing while coming closer. Everything with Sunset and her magic was well done, tense and exciting as it developed and I can't wait for more. Sci-Twi was well handled and it was amusing to see CInch unable to deal with the fact that CHS may be doing things better than her she doesn't like. I can't wait to see Sunset and Sci-Twi meet!

And that cover is beautiful!

Well, this is an intriguing start. I look forward to seeing where you are heading.

The next two chapters are written- and the third is well under way. Expect more tomorrow!

Well, this was a start that pulls you right in. Already love the story, though I don't know how I couldn't with how the last story ended.

Looking forward to seeing Twilight awkwardly investigate. Also curious about how Cinch is going to play into it... She already seems like an antagonist, but more professional than in some other stories.

While we've never had healing magic in the show proper there was a character in the comics who's talent was in healing magic. If I remember correctly it was a talent so rare that the princesses invited her to study under them.

Great chapter getting into the start of their magic and how they react to it. And I can see your point in Fluttershy and it does fit. My headcanon has always been that Fluttershy is transpony/transspecies, that she is an Earth Pony in a Pegasus body. Her personality and Cutie Mark talent do seem more in line with Earth Ponies. She just has the extra capabilities of Pegasus magic to add to that, bringing about unique results with her. And with Earth Ponies being closer to the earth, where you would find many medicinal plants, animals, and what not, it makes sense if Fluttershy had more of an Earth Pony nature, that she could use healing magic in this way.

Instinctively, Sunset reached out mentally to probe the non-existing magical field- only to get feedback as a shimmering web of magic resonated around her, invisible tot he naked eye.

Besides that I enjoyed the chapter and want more.

It is scary how much sense that headcanon makes.

...let us simply say that I have grand plans for this ability of Fluttershy's.

Oh my gosh this is such a good story so far:yay:, I can't remember if I commented on your other story but that was fantastically written as well. I can't wait for the next chapter:pinkiehappy:

What I really like about this story, and the one that came before, is the fact that everything makes sense. Conversations that should happen now happen now. Divergence from canon is given logical, consistent setup. And the idiot balls have all been punted over the fence.

It's really refreshing.

8503673
One of the things I earnestly believe is that you can have drama without idiot balls being held by otherwise intelligent characters. In the original Friendship Games, Twilight refusing to sneak around and talk to the people who seem to understand what's going on with magic- and then being bullied into releasing the magic- seemed a little forced. Sure, they had to fit a movie into two hours- but that means writers like me have chances to pick the plot apart.

That doesn't mean smart characters can't make mistakes- or be idiots when they do (we all have our flaws), but to have a character forget everything they know- and then cling to that idiocy- is why I have trouble enjoying movies and TV shows.

And I'm keeping that quote about kicking idiot balls. It's a good one!

Oh boy, this is gonna lead to many fun things. Sci-Twi will definitely be interesting to see develop with her aspirations like this and with the girls' magic becoming stronger their interactions will be glorious. Also, I loved the bits about Applebloom waning magic as well and how that was felt in Equestria. XD

I can't wait for more!

8503767
Applebloom wanting magic won't really be a problem.
It's when she tells Scootaloo that the real problems start.
Don't you just love foreshadowing? I know I do...

Sap Monster of last Tuesday (Apple Bloom, age 12). Apple Bloom, age 12, huh? Well, ask and Frank Miller, Linkara and ASBAR will deliver.

8504908
...I have no idea what this is supposed to be.

No no no no NO! You messed up! You have to write "Apple Bloom, age 12" now whenever her name appears, otherwise the joke doesn't work. Now where am I going to get my secret All-Star Batman and Robin references from? I'm never going to continuously make fun of Frank Miller at this point.😭 (Ehhh, I can make fun of him whenever I want anyway, it doesn't matter 😒)

8504940
If you want to make fun of Frank Miller, please keep it PG. I'm fairly certain Pinkie can read the comments, and I don't want to scar her.

This is getting good! Ive always wanted Sunset to have her magic back in the human world (i dont mean wimpy telepathy either) and now she does! Im also glad you are trying to avoid the writing trope of "Things happen because of stupidity and lack of communication". I eagerly look forward to more of what you have to offer.

Flute in metal... Damn right.
They should grab Octavia too... if they want to be epic that is. :rainbowlaugh:

8508389
Agreed. I don't think Octavia would go for it, but...

It speaks for itself, I would say.

8508430

It would be like an Octavia/Vinyl lovechild...

8508436
I think there's actually a story based around that.

"magiobabble" sounds a little awkward. How about "thaumababble"?

OMG NEW UPDATE. YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY

I loved this. I love how pinkie manifests her magic. I want to see the cakes and her family reactions to it. Rainbows I think would be manipulating the weather and running/flying fast. And Raritys world be making gems/making dresses/finding gems.

I want more.

Ok, Pinkie's magic is mildly terrifying. And filled with potential amusement.

While Twilight explained her methodology, Cinch pulled a small thumb drive out of one pocket, and carefully inserted into the back of Twilight's desktop.

Spyware? Some kind of insurance policy? Bit of an odd choice when she already has leverage on Twilight.

Incidentally, I wonder how long it will take Twilight to notice it. If she's frequently hooking new equipment up to it then she might notice it sooner rather than later.

"Does this mean Ah could have magic too?"

apple bloom has her prioritys in ordr

Yeah, Pinkie's magic makes way too much sense, very appropriate. And she definitely doesn't seem to have the same sense of shame as her friends. And things will really be picking up now that the meeting between Sci-Twi and Sunset is getting closer and closer. I hope Sci-Twi manages to notice the thumb drive that was inserted into her laptop. It'll be satisfying to see Cinch get her comeuppance in the end. And oh, boy, Scootaloo looking for her own magic, that's gonna be something. Gotta wonder if she'll be able to keep quiet on it. Wouldn't be too good if one of their haters found out and tried to find their own magic or make sure the CMC never get the chance themselves.

Cinch certainly seems the type to steal a student's research, but while she is certainly clever, does she have the smarts enough to pass it off as her own? Or is there more to her surreptitious use of the USB drive in Twilight's laptop? Inquiring minds want to know... Ok, I can wait for it to come out in story...

Principal Cinch glared at her computer monitor. She'd installed the spy drive on Twilight's computer to grant her access to her student's files; half-expecting to see proof of collaboration with, or plans to defect to CHS. Instead, all the girl had done on her encrypted desktop had been record of her research notes.

Damn it, I knew she was acting too considerate.

I am entertained.

my muscles- particularly in my legs and lower back- suffered mind strain

I don't think that's the right word unless Twilight's uber-intelligence comes from a distributed nervous system.

Principal Cinch glared at her computer monitor. She'd installed the spy drive on Twilight's computer to grant her access to her student's files; half-expecting to see proof of collaboration with, or plans to defect to CHS.

Fu*k her. I thinks that illegal.

OMG YAYAY New Update.

I loved this chapter. When will people discover that discord has magic? And when will the CMC discover their shared magic?

I want more. I love this story

As much as I enjoyed Discord's little Fantasia moment is every single person at CHS going to get their own unique form of magic?

If so They might want to add few more Xs around the place

So magic is transmissible to ordinary humans now? That was fast. Also glad to see the CMC are being true to form again. I don't know why Applebloom's family trusted her to keep her mouth shut. And then there's Scootaloo, who thinks the best way to regain Rainbow's trust is to steal some of the magic her friends are trying to keep under wraps. :ajbemused:

Solid chapter, but quite a few prominent spelling errors.:applejackunsure:

8514884
Maybe. If it was on school property, using school resources, however, Cinch may not be violating the letter of the law. Certainly violating the spirit, though.

8514913
Scootaloo isn't "stealing" the magic- she was trying to see if she could access the magical field herself. I agree that her method is poor- but as we'll see, Scootaloo is trying to find some way to avoid having to be the one to approach Rainbow Dash. Unlike all the other links after Anon-A-Miss, Scootaloo and Rainbow never sat down and talked through their problems- Scootaloo thinks magic might be an icebreaker to get them talking again. She just hasn't though through all the consequences.

Apple Bloom, meanwhile, was never asked to keep what she knows quiet- Sunset knows that magic's existence is becoming self-evident. There's plenty of evidence- its just that no one's believed the evidence thus far.

Also, could you please point out those spelling errors? I do spell check stuff, but help is appreciated.

8514893
Not everyone is going to get magic- those who have touched magic strongly (the Rainbooms, Sunset, the Sirens) and those with willpower or a magically strong counterpart will have a chance to get magic.

Magic, as we will see, has differetn rules for acquisition than Equestrian magic. Those rules will be revealed...

In a much later chapter.

8514943
'Also, could you please point out those spelling errors? I do spell check stuff, but help is appreciated.'

When you responded to my comment you said may boy be not may not be

Oh boy, now that Scootaloo has allowed a way for the magic to spread - as we see with Discord - who knows how much more trouble may arise from those with nastier ideas. And very appropriate power for Rarity, being unable to unweave and possible weave clothing like that. Heck, I wonder just how powerful she really is. She might even be capable of weaving and unweaving the magic in the area, thus, allowing magic to either come together better for people or even slow down or even halt someone else's magic for a time.

And oh boy, Sci-Twi just gets closer and closer to finding out more about what's happening, and she and Princess Twilight will soon be in the same area. Hopefully Sunset will be able to keep her busy and I will be looking forward to see how Sunset and Sci-Twi play off one another. And I really hope Cinch gets her comeuppance for her deeds. Such an arrogant, paranoid witch.

8514943
She may not be 'stealing' it, but she is sticking her nose into someone else's business, with intentions she should know they wouldn't approve of. As you said, she's not thinking this through.

Applebloom might not have been told to keep quiet, but she should have recognized it was a good idea. Of course, Applebloom, and the rest of the CMC, have a well-established track record of not considering the consequences of their actions, so this is hardly out-of-character.

As for the spelling errors, I'll PM them to you so as not to stretch this comment out.

Good thing, I got up in time just as things are good. I can't believe you didn't tell us about this sequel in an update or something.

When sci-twi broke the statue, we saw at the end of Everfree that magic had been leaking out of the portal, and hit near Gloriosa Daisy and Juniper Montage in time. So I guess it wouldn’t be too out of possibility to leak locally.

Cinch? Individually your students may be better than CHS, but they will also be more likely to backstab each other when they’re working together, even when it would be against the better interest of Crystal Prep.

Principal Celestia also had a Beard? Is it wrong that I kind of expected them to be called Starswirl?

8514846
It seems like an overall synaptic overdrive. It's just that her body can't keep up with the firing signals. She might get instant carpal tunnel from using to write equations more quickly.
