The story is great on the historic perspective you came up with.
This was a great story, thanks for writing it. I thought you did a fantastic job capturing the tone and format of a newspaper interview, without that ever being intrusive to the story. Just the right balance of descriptions with swiftly-summarised feelings. I was casually enjoying it until the bit with the accident, and then it got really good; that bit had real impact.
