She did like Luna and that is why she used a life draining spell rather than brutally slaughtering her. Remember, Luna would not allow Colgate to resume her bloodthirsty ways so she had to do what it took to do so and using that line of succession to take over Equestria was the only way for her to do it.
I will admit, it was hard for me to kill off Luna in this story but for Colgate to finally be able to achieve her ultimate goal, which is what I had planned since the very beginning of the first story, it had to happen.
May Luna be tormented for eternity by the voices of all she betrayed.
