FireOfTheNorth

Worldbuilding is my passion, and if those worlds involve small pastel equines, all the better. Updates and new chapters posted on the 15th of the month.

Dark things lurk in the shadows of Canterlot, and they are becoming far bolder than they used to be. Beryl “Berry” Fields is but one of many agents working for Equestria’s enigmatic Ministry to track down these unnatural occurrences. When investigating one such case, she meets a pony that defies all reason; a dark stallion with unimaginable power and secrets he intends to take to the grave; secrets Berry is determined to discover anyway.

Well, this truly is an interesting story, I look forward to reading more of this.

“Gargoyles have an insatiable appetite for pony life. That is, the possibility that is an equine’s life. That is why each victim they claimed was a young adult. They have grown to an appropriate size that the gargoyle is able to harvest them, but they still have so much life ahead of them. The gargoyle, upon catching its prey, tears it open and sucks out the life of the victim; it is fed by all the years that could have been.”

Hmmm, sounds like the angle things from Doctor Who...

My name—my true name—is Shadowmere.”

Hmmm, doesn't sound like anything from The Elder Scrolls to me.......

He stopped as a silver bolt from Beryl’s crossbow pierced his heart.

Wow. That's cold. I like though that she can make such decision so quickly, and without any hesitation. She understands that some things have to be done. One life is not greater then many. And I also like that Shadowmere isn't just a cold blooded killer, as he didn't kill the young filly to save many, but let her live. A wonderful balance between cold consultations, and showing compaction.

As for the bat-ponies, I'm very interested. Are they being controlled like Luna by some evil dark thing, like Nightmare. Or are they maybe just a cult. Or are they not even related to Nightmare Moon.

“It is our duty to welcome Her children back into the fold, and when She returns, we must all be ready.”

However, this would suggest to me that they awaited the return of Nightmare Moon.

Anyway, I'm sure this will all be reviled soon or later, so I'll simply wait to see what is happening.

Why did you make the chapters so long? You respond to comments by moving your mouse over to the right hand side of the comment that you want to respond to and then clicking on the >> that appears.

Truthfully, I originally planned for these chapters to be longer than those of my previous fics, but not quite as long as they turned out. The idea was to be able to tell some longer self-contained stories in each chapter with a two story arcs loosely tying them together. I thought 20 pages (I write each story in Microsoft Word before publishing it here) would be enough, but it turns out 30-40 was more accurate. Another reason they're so long is that this story will be much shorter than fics like The Equine Scrolls: SkyFiM, which was 87 chapters long (not counting the prologues and epilogues). Darkest Shadows will be exactly 20 chapters long, divided into 2 10-chapter arcs. Hope I answered your question with my long response.
