Your grammar has the sense of someone who doesn't really know what words mean. Not a criticism, just kind of odd. You've set up a lot of things for them to overcome, but I get the feeling you're not going to write about them overcoming anything. It's otherwise a pretty mediocre sob story. Not enough ponies, either.
