Rainbow Dash's hooves curled tighter towards her chest. Her wings stretched out, closed in, and stretched again. A shudder ran down her face, tensed, and collected in her mouth with a gasp. Ruby eyes flashing wide, she sat up straight, panting heavily.
She was still sitting on the mattress on the second level of the abandoned lake house. Night had completely fallen, and the stars were spilling over the sky above. The long stretch of the Milky Way glittered majestically overhead.
Slowly, Rainbow Dash's breaths calmed down. She discovered that she was shivering. It was cold—annoyingly cold. She imagined that it was because of the valley she was in; a natural wind funnel had formed and it was blowing cool moisture off the marshlands and into the open body of the house.
Rainbow Dash ran her forelimbs over each other, trying to rub her coat warm. She didn't understand why it was so freezing that night, or at least she pretended not to understand. The hollow sensation of her empty stomach did little to solace her. Desperately, she crawled across the mattress and reached for her saddlebag. She knew that there was one blanket left. The other two had been sacrificed in her infiltration of the Minotaur quarry days before.
Her hoof fished around the inside of the saddlebag. Finally, she clasped onto the blanket. Desperately, she yanked it out. A green book slid out onto the bed along with it.
Rainbow Dash sighed. She avoided the sight of the green tome. A few seconds passed, during which her shivers doubled. Biting her lip, she forced herself to look at the book.
Reaching over, she grasped it. Her forelimbs shook even more upon contact. It was difficult enough to so much as touch the binding. There was no way that Rainbow Dash would let herself open the book. Not yet.
A sniffle escaped her lips. She hugged the book to her chest and hung her face with a sigh. Several moments later, she gazed back up at the stars, at the innumerable bits of beautiful yet meaningless specks that shone across the ceiling of the earth. As gorgeous as the sight was, looking at it longer gave her little solace. Soon they all blurred together into an indiscernible gray.
She clenched her eyes shut as a hint of moisture touched her lashes. Unlike with Gold Petals, it was too cold to fly comfortably anywhere. Instead, Rainbow Dash drew the blanket over her figure, curled up in the corner of the bed, and hugged the book tightly to her—occasionally nuzzling it as the next hour ushered her into the warmth of sleep.

That is all.
That book... it carries a part of her friends, and therefore... a part of her soul.
On June 24 2012, A teen in Toronto has been found nearly dead in his bedroom. He was infront of his laptop listening to music when his father found him shivering in a corner. Doctors say the cause of his illness is suspense and that they are unsure if he will live through it. The police are investigating weather or not this was an accident or foul play.
Now I want to know what's in that book! dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/emoticons/sillyfilly_Rainbow_Dash.png
Is it.... A photo album!
With pictures of her friends!
This chapter is so sad! Why would you do this to us?
-THEpandaman007
My guess is a photo album.
its got to have something to do with how they vanished...or where they vanished to.

IIIIIt's Dashie's Third Marathon Evaluation Time!
So I'm pretty sure I know what the book is. I think that it's got to be Twilight's field guide to the Elements of Harmony. It would explain why she cares for the book so much, and why it stirs up sadness inside of her. Other than that, well...this chapter was quite sad. These are my thoughts so far.

P.S. Ohhhh...we're h-half way the-er...oh-oh...l-...liiiiiivin' on a prayer...

This story is beautiful.
i think the book is a picture album
Wasn't the cover of that one Daring Do book green?

Yep...
That book must contain pictures of something of her and her friends together, explaining why she's so hung up over it. Also, the feels in this chapter. Without it even saying it, the sadness is just everywhere. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Poor Rainbow Dash.
Dat book seems important.
There's a love hate relationship going on with that book. Loves it because it's probably related to her friends. Hates it because it reminds her of what happened to them.
Yes, I'm still crawling through this! (I may finish the entire series sometime in the 2050s...)
I'm sure that Rainbow's reaction to Golden Petals' eye colour is important. The colour of the ocean... and in my book, that means the colour of Fluttershy's eyes. We know from canon that those two have (or had, by this time?) a particularly strong and close relationship. I think Rainbow pulled away because those eyes made her somehow feel as though she'd been kissing Fluttershy.
As for the book, it has to be related to the other Mane Sixers. I can't think of anything else that would make sense. It's not the Elements of Harmony guide we see in the show, since that's brown. So perhaps it's a book containing memories, memories that are just too painful for Dash to think about now. However, it's also pretty clear that it's very much not a disposable possession.
The actual writing is still a bit uneven (eg Luna's grammar is horrible at times: "Thou loyalty shalt"?!) but that's not the point. We now know that Rainbow does have a specific object to her flight (even though she believes it may be a one-way journey) and that, as Luna tells her, "time is of the essence". If Equestria itself has been Discorded, the second point is easy to explain... but where can she go?
Current guess: to the place where the sun rises. Okay, it's obvious, and I don't know why it would help, but I haven't thought of a better idea!
Book that stirs painful memories? Photo album.
People seem to be inclined towards photo album and I really don't know why. It's an important thing that the book is green. So yeah, it's Daring Do book.
I'm growing more and more curious about what in the blue blazes this book is. As others have speculated, a photo album sounds plausible. Wasn't there a photo album in the show, or is that where they wrote friendship reports? I don't remember, but I really want to know.

But that book [the ones on the Elements of Harmony] was red.
3864276 Judging by this comment and when I began this series in January, it looks like you had a 100-week head-start...and now I'm caught up with you 8 books later. I need to take a break...nah.
...photo album?

I don't think so, Twi's notes maybe?
I sure hope Gold Petals makes another appearance at some point in this series. Such an awesome character, couldn't get enough of her. (Not just for shipping purposes either).
Everyone seems to have quite a few guesses as to what that book could be. I like the idea of it being Daring Do, but I'm not sure why she would be see afraid to read it if it was. Sure, she's avoiding thinking of her friends' fate, but it's not like the book is explicitly tied to all of them, right?

I dont think so unless if it's a gift from someone close I believe its something tied to the 6
