I... really don't know how to respond to this story. It's beautifully written. And boy is it Dark. I don't know if that's the intention or not, but I'm not sure it makes a difference either way.

5500889 This doesn't invalidate your work. The same pairing can be at the center of a number of different stories. I've got a Sunshyne fic I'm (sort of) working on too, but it's miles away from this from this one.

Good story, haven't seen any Sunshy shipping as of yet (aside from this one now).
But I have one question. Wouldn't that cause a paradox? Or at least some kind of time fracture? To have gone back into the past and change history to such an extent? Sure, the future Sunset becomes dust, but you'd have to have some kind of alternate time dimension or something to have one world with no 'Shy and one with a 'Shy still there and not killed. Unless it's part of the spell? But that still is dangerous in the timey wimey stuff that can wibble wobble. There is a reason most time travel stories stress this kind of importance.
Otherwise, good story! I just can't help but get stuck on the technical issues at times.
5505933 I get getting stuck on it, and that is why I stuck to the emotion rather then the... you know. In my head It is alternate time lines. Using the spell rapidly ages the person (the cost) and is only useful to make a new world that can be better then the one that currently exists. Both of these are good reasons for Sunset to have never used them before. I hope that makes you feel better about the technicals.

5594051 And Sunset isn't able to write her letters? Rainbow Rocks established that Twilight can now travel worlds at will. Even if you assume that she only enters the portal very rarely because she's busy with royal duties or so as to not upset the balance of the worlds, one would think the death of a very dear friend of hers would be important enough to make an exception, especially for the princess of friendship.
Don't sweat it, in the end it all comes down to personal preference anyway. I'm pretty sure SunShy is the most popular Sunset ship with any of the Mane 5 by a large margin. I wouldn't have a problem with SunShy stories if only they wouldn't vastly outnumber everything else. To this day I haven't seen a single story shipping her with Rainbow or Pinkie, precisely one with Applejack, and some few with Rarity, and I'm reading a lot of stories with Sunset, so it can't be just bad luck that I coincidentally only ever run into the same ship over and over again.
5594077 I'm surprised that Sunlight isn't the most popular. As for the rest, and I normally don't defend with this, but it feels like a nitpick. First off, the funeral was one week after her death, so not a ton of time to get Twilight. Second, even if Twilight did become good friends with them, they've still only spent about a week with her (which is one of my problems with the Sunlight ship) so forgetting to contact her through the grief and pain they had is possible. And third is just that I forgot and I'm sorry that irks you, though I would think it wouldn't hurt the story too much. If it does, that saddens me, but I suppose it is all up to one's opinion and I know I've nitpicked to death plenty of stories.
One final note on those ships, I can see SS with (in order of plausibility), Fluttershy, Pinkie, Applejack, Twilight, Rarity, and then Rainbow Dash. The first two are because of their forgiving nature. I can see both being willing to fully embrace SS. However, Fluttershy beats Pinkie because SS is a stronger character and might gravitate to the shy girl more then the hyper active one that may drive her insane. Applejack is next for being willing to forgive, though she would waving time around her and it being plausible for her to hold a grudge for the princess because SS left her tutelage is all why she is so low. Rarity and SS have the most negative history together, so have the most to forgive. Finally I get to RD. This one is mainly because their personalities clash. I just don't see how the headstrong goof of Rainbow would do well when paired with the equally headstrong, fairly no nonsense SS. If she was competitive, maybe, but SS to me always thinks she just needs to grow stronger and better herself. Not to beat others, but just to be better, which is an entirely force then what drives RD. At least, in my opinion.

Good points, if I'm being honest with myself Fluttershy does seem the best fit of the Mane 5, so I could live with it being more widespread than the others pairings, but it's the size of the gap that bothers me. Rainbow Dash has been shipped with just about everything including the kitchen sink regardless of how it would realistically work out and yet I don't see anyone pairing her with Sunset for some reason.

5851606 Actually, oddly enough, except for one person questioning paradoxes, I haven't gotten any real criticism on this, mainly praise, which I am happy to see as sad has always been a genre I've been worried about. However, I am always willing to hear/debate when I am wrong, so let loose, please.
Well done. You did a great job on showing everyone's grieving differences. Fluttershy's death didn't make me feel any kind of way, but the funeral definitely did.
The only thing that bothers me is that the romance feels totally unnecessary. The story would have been just as meaningful if they were just friends, and their romance feels kinda tacked on to the main story.
