Actually either is correct. Forearms would just make it a pretty tight hug since the forearm on a horse is visually what would be the upper arm of a human.
It's been awhile since I wrote Lyra to any great extent...gonna have to remember to keep her fairly spontaneous when I get around to The Glass Kingdom.

It would be inconsistent with canon for it to be Trixie. Her somewhat overly indulgent drinking habits are something she's only supposed to have acquired AFTER moving to Ponyville.

Really? She did pick them up very quickly then as she went full Lulamoon on her first night there and apparently had before. Plus she was plastered for her first trip to Oaton. I think Ponyville might have driven her to drink but that she was always rather prone to the booze before.
Lyra Heartstrings calls her fathers Pops or Dads, but her mother Skyla. I almost get the impression that she does not think about her mother as her mother, but some distant relative.

Well although she knows her mother she isn't in regular contact with her where as her fathers have raised her so yes she's not close to her. Thinking of her as a distant relation is probably to closest thing to their relationship.
