Hungry

Hunger

Do you ponies know it? Do you know hunger?

Do you know true hunger?

No

You do not.

You know only transitive, passing illusions of hunger. Rumblings you call them. Trivial.

Ponies: so very happy.

Never hungry, rarely sad, forever blinded by their blissful existence.

Pity.

What a waste. What a waste these ponies are. What a waste this happiness is.

Life is not happiness.

What is life?

For a pony, life is a little work and a lot of play. Ponies have everything. They are lackadaisical in the art of living. They grow up, marry, do things, procreate, and die, happy. Through all this, they are so very happy. You are all so happy.

This won't do.

Perhaps WE should introduce ourselves. WE are the hunger that never sleeps. WE are the bitterness of life. WE seek only its amalgamation and cessation. WE seek peace, and peace is death. WE seek harmony, and harmony is emptiness. WE seek conformity, and conformity is assimilation.

So much hurt and pain and suffering in this world. Yet you ponies casually frolic about in your idyllic wonderland, oblivious to that which goes on around you. Sun Horse has told US of your ignorance. She did it for you. She kept you in the dark. She kept you happy. Moon Horse tried to expose the truth, but the truth would not be heard. We are coming to spread that truth. The truth of the universe:

The night lasts forever.

Yes, it is true, you can battle it. Many have tried, but all fail. It is the one constant of the universe. You ponies fight against this constant. You must be stopped. That is OUR job.

Perhaps you are wondering what WE are. Actually, if you are anything at all like Sun Horse informed us you would be, we know you are wondering. "Perhaps" may be the wrong word. There is no "perhaps" to your curiosity. That is good. You shall be ever more eager to learn OUR truth.

The truth is, what WE are is itself inconsequential. WE are but agents for the propagation of peace. WE believe you would benefit more from hearing what WE have accomplished.

Perhaps you have heard of Dream Valley. Perhaps you have heard of its legendary protector Megan. Perhaps you have heard of the many creatures she slew. Tirek comes to mind. You may wonder why Dream Valley is only a legend. You may wonder what ever happened to it.

WE happened to it.

Once the foolish ponies of Dream Valley were like you. Worse even, perhaps. So carefree, so blind to the realities of this world. They ran in fear when trouble reared its head, but just as quickly, they always defeated the foes that ailed them.

Almost always. WE were the almost.

Poor, poor, deluded ponies. So many ways they tried to save themselves from the truth that all good things must end. They refused to the very last to see OUR vision. But thankfully they learned, and became one with us. Sadly, they resisted. They built their walls, they unleashed their rainbows, they conscripted their neighbors. And at last when the tide lapped at their hooves, they closed their eyes and prayed to an uncaring goddess. Of course she didn't save them. She's on OUR side. WE subsumed them, for WE hungered for them to see the light, and yea, they did.

Are you starting to see the light? Perhaps, Evening Star, you desire an example dearer to your heart.

Let US then relate, the story of Sun Horse. WE are sure you know the story well. The tale of how Sun Horse would explore her world every score years, how she would soar among her clouds, gallop among about her jungles, and swim around her seas. She sought to learn the mysteries of life. But there is no mystery. Only suffering, those who refuse to acknowledge it, and death.

WE came upon her crouched within a hidden vale, deeply at peace among the reeds and brushes of the small stream she sat near. WE came upon her content to believe her falsehoods, and WE shattered them for her. She resisted, but in time she knew the truth and struggled no more. For a time, OUR hunger was sated, but now no longer.

Now, by her own inchoate calculations, it has been three years since you saw her last. For three years you in your self-assuredly divine triumvirate have ruled Equestria. You have been sustained by the silly shimmer of hope that your teacher shall return. Alas, through US, soon she shall.

She cried, you know. She cried for Equestria. She cried for her little ponies. But most of all, she cried for you, Evening Star. Her body fell quickly, but her mind lingered for many years. Of course, she's all US now. It's true, WE are.

Your mentor, your guide, your teacher, your princess your Celestia? She is none of those anymore. She is ours. She once espoused such lofty ideas. No longer. She now only knows our truth. Death is freedom.

Become one with US, Evening Star. Know the death of self.

No? Very well. Allow US, as much as we despise it, to temporarily relegate ourselves to your mortal plane. Allow US to relate a story your mentor shared with us.

Once there was a young filly, who was wandering through the forest. She came upon a griffin, his paw ensnared in a steel manticore trap. The little filly tried to help the griffin herself, but to no avail. She ran for help, but upon returning with an elder, found the griffin expired, the blood loosed from his veins.

She vowed to create a world where this would not happen. How very, very, foolish of her. This will always happen. There is no escaping it. You try, but in the end you fail. You must cease fighting this. WE will help you.

For what WE have taught, and what Sun Horse has accepted, is that she should have killed the griffin. For while he have been unable to join US, he would at least not have suffered, sustained by the false hope of life.

All the world is full of suffering, and you ponies are so very, very blind to it. But do not fret, OUR little ponies, for WE bring eyesight to the blind.

WE are bringing it to you.

WE have learned that you blind ponies are fond of the rule of three. WE have only listed two examples. This is because you will be the third. Your predecessors. Then your princess. Then you. WE hunger for justice, and WE shall see it through.

WE are coming, Evening Star. WE are coming for you and your people. Enjoy your last fruitless months of frivolity. Then you will join US. WE are the indomitable hunger. WE will win. You can't stop US.

Nothing can stop the Smooze.

Well written perhaps but i still feel like i was trolled when it was revealed to be the... I can't take the... seriously.

Though i kinda should have expected this from your blog posts.

4859555 can you
that
, since a lot of people read comments before they read the story. Thanks. (Just get rid of the spaces between the brackets) Bao bao bao!

4859570 i edited it to remove it.

I figured out who it was about halfway through the story. This just confirms my belief that THEY might very well be the most frightening villains that ponies have ever faced.

And I thought that the season 7/season 8 bit was a nice touch too.

About 3/4 of the way through, I just got tired of the constant "resistance is futile" business and skipped to the end to confirm that, yes, I had indeed seen the reveal coming from a mile off.:ajbemused:

What really gets me is the amount of thought you seem to have put into this story, only to force all those promising ideas into the background so you could get on with setting up your punchline. And ironically, it's the presence of these ideas that warrants giving the story a thumbs-down: you should know better than this, man.

4869165 yeah, with this one, I had a cool idea and then didn't really know how to execute it properly. Thank you very much for the honest feedback.

Couple of technical things:
"... oblivious to that that goes on around you."
I think that's a bit awkward. Substituting "that which" or "almost all" has the same impact.

"There is no perhaps to your curiosity."
I don't think that's how you're supposed to use that word. "end" works,

"Perhaps you have heard of the many creatures she slayed."
Slew works.

Great characterisation, and frankly it's an interesting take on Smooze being more than a directable force.

4908830 thank you very much for the corrections. I'll edit it when I'm more awake and not on my phone.

*Looks into the distance.* "So evil is bound for another generation." *Flies off into the sunset,*

now THIS is the Smooze i want.

4869165 As someone who doesn't know anything about the smooze except for what's already in fanfiction, I thought this was pretty good. Not amazing, but damn if it didn't make me shiver. Maybe. Well, it didn't, but I was somewhere in that vicinity.

Seriously though, this was terrifying. It might have been done a million times before, and some people might have done this better, but it's not less chilling for it. It still earns a gold star for being scary regardless of the smooze twist at the end.

5122856 wow, that's high praise. Thank you. :pinkiehappy:

4869165 looking back through the comments, I realize I never asked you: how would you have done this differently?

This, frankly, I should like to hope I wouldn't have done at all. If I had as clear a vision of this future Equestria and the characters inhabiting it as your background detailing implies, I'd have written about them instead.

...I couldn't help but read this all out loud while impersonating Harlan Ellison's narration for AM from I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream... disregarding periods into one long run-on stream of psychotic consciousness full of off key cadence and unnecessary emphasis...

That is to say I really enjoyed reading this.

6252534 glad you liked it! Thanks for reading. :pinkiehappy:

Thus spoke the Smooze, but THEY, for all THEIR enforcement of the inevitability of the eternal, dark nothingness of death, THEY failed to realize one crucial fact.

In strange aeons, even death may die, and the aeons THEY have endured have been very strange indeed.

Video don't work no more. :B

The note in description about when this takes place kind of... keeps it from making any sense. If we remove it from current canon, that punchline hits pretty hard. :D

Haha this was written when that was a far off time. I'll need to update it.
