Cute story, I liked that Caramel showed a hint of vulnerability in himself when he looked at his own cutiemark . I always thought Caramel was more shy and unsure of himself, though him having confidence is certainly a nice change.

I don't like portraying Caramel as a overly shy pony. Through his very minimal (but frequent) apprerances in the show he's never 'shy'. Forgetful maybe, but not shy. Shy people don't go out to be rodeo clowns or yell at you when you don't have enough cider. He's either working, participating in events, or just milling about town.
If we can count that time he had a deep voice against spike he doesn't seem to take kindly to nonsense either.
ALot of the time people just make him shy and girly because hes 'next to big mac', and big mac isn't the shy girly one so he has to be.
Fluttershy is the shy pony. He's not a wellspring of confidence either, but he's got the standard alotted amount that most people have =)

Ironically I also think Mac is pretty damn shy and submissive in the relationship. Maybe shy is the wrong word for Caramel, but I see him as having maybe self confidence issues? I dunno, I wrote too much fanfiction about a character with no character, haha.

self confidence issues, maybe, but not glaring ones where he never believes in himself. I kinda can't write that way about him, since i've made him a pony who basilcy goes everywhere and does a boatload of jobs that often require responsibility. Yo can't not believe in yourself if you do that.
Mac...mac never seems shy, he's just not expressive. Submissive we'll never know, that's just personal but considering all the nonsense he's had to do in the series i wouldn't bet on it. Oh well
