Thousands of years following the story of Archmage, Twilight takes on a new student. One who doesn't know the first thing about advanced magic. One who needs to start from Square One.
57444335744519 Got to drive the point home. People want to be heroes, They want glory, or to help, or many other reasons. But they never think what there parents or friends would feel if they ended up dying from trying to be a hero. Also remember, She is just a student going to 'school' and 'lessons'. She isn't a Guard, trained in self defence for years and drilled how to act during an emergancy. So her parents are understandingly upset she almost died, especially since 2-3 weeks earlier she couldn't do anything with magic and was safe in Canterlot.
5744634 ...... ok, at most 6-7 months. It's not been that long since her magic was actually useable, and 2-3 weeks of combat training at most. And by 'combat training' I mean she goes into a room and fights the princess and ends up with broken bones or stab wounds.
She never got any training, was basically a white belt noobie who has never even thrown a punch in her life, given a wooden sword, pushed into a ring with a fighter that is a Master Blackbelt that has Mastered every fighting style that has ever existed, gets her ass beaten and broken for 2-3 weeks, and get told "You now have enough training to not need any guards protecting you while going into woods full of deadly dangerous monsters that not even we Masters can deal with. And you're going in alone."
5745062 Honestly the real problem, as I commented in the previous chapter, is that they were on a suicide mission. Nobody in their right mind would form up a defensive POSITION SO FAR FROM THE ACTUAL DEFENSES. Like, seriously, they could have held the narrow entry to the gate against any number of timberwolves, but no, we've gotta go meet them OUT IN THE FUCKING OPEN.
5747776 Yep. Walls are there to assist the defence after all and not to create some useless, because undefended obstacle, after the defence has been breached. Meeting the enemy outside your defensive perimeters is just dumb, except if you want to surprise them, which would obviously not work with the Timberwolves.
"No father should have to bury his daughter." He said.
Yet he had... So many hundreds of thousands of times.
During the battle which she had charged headlong into.
When he heard how his precious daughter had been severely hurt.
When he saw and heard of the extent of her injuries as she lay before him in a makeshift hospital bed.
When he learned that moving her from one place to another may have paralyzed or killed her because of her injuries.
Even to the moment of her waking and many times thereafter, that stallion will have buried his daughter. Again, and again, and again, ad infinitum, until he heard and saw that the reaper would not be coming for her then.
In the few short days since his beloved daughter charged headlong into danger, that father suffered more than most of us will ever know...
5751431 What the hell do you think shattered her vertebrae?Timberwolves don't weight that much and aside from the bites, she'd have been fine. I know I didn't explain it very well, but the enchantments forcibly ejected her into the interior, shattering part of her spine and several ribson the way. The whole 'bowled into her' was supposed to be the giveaway.
Again, I didn't describe it very well, so I can see the foundation for your argument. Allow me to pull the 'it's my story so this is the way it is' cap on.
They needed to defend that tunnel while the emchantments were activated. Defending inside the tunnel would have interfered with the activation. Defending inside the wall ran the risk of the unicorns activating the defensive enchantments being interrupted. Thusly, they had to keep the horde from getting into the tunnel until the enchantments were ready. Then, once prepared, fall back inside and activate them. Dealing with any injured wolves who were in the tunnel when it was triggered would have been much easier than fighting the whole horde of them.
5748418 I can't say I've experienced the feeling first-hand, but I've seen the look on a father's face when he heard his daughter had been hurt. Waited with him in a hospital waiting room, dreading bad news and praying for good...
But unlike this story, good news never came.
I'll never forget what I saw and felt that day.
To say it was harrowing, and humbling would be a horrendous understatement.
There's a reason that to this day, there is no single word in our tongue that one calls a parent who has lost a child. For the pain, anguish and suffering they go through is beyond words to describe.
I can't say as I've experienced it... but I do know the face of that pain.
no spike to the rescue ? what the hell ? is he only sleeping for these 3000 odd years ? 5744433 you know that he's right ? and a lot of guardpony parents had to bury their children ?
Holy fsk ... To think that Olive gave a heart felt moment, but the dad just dropped a line and left. Without so much as a how-do-you-do. Still it's cool to see those dragons back.
Dude. Harsh.
Aw, why's Audit gotta be douchetastic like that?
Great chapter though!

5744539 I'm pretty sure its been a fair bit longer than that...
Sorry, I've got to:

I would guess that Audit is taking the near loss of Star the worst.

But apparently being caught in the gate as the enchantments were activated had no ill-effects (e.g. Star).

Thankfully she isn't out right paralyzed. Go Magic.
Candi is my name and it's even spelled with an I. I am amused.
Also, wow Dad. Way to be a hooting dickhole.

5756012 There's probably supposed to be text there but all I'm seeing is white box. Do I have a setting turned off or somewhat?

5763636 I don't remember which story it was. I think Crystal Mirrors, that describes what and where Spike is/was.
He's Chronos the God of Time basically and will sometimes still sleep for ages.
Even more of a spoiler
Him and Celestia are together and if Celestia is to be believed, he can sleep for decades after they have sex
