This is a wonderful premise, and your writing style has a lot of promise. As such, I must say you really need to go back to this and expand on this story. You've got all the elements to have quite the story, but it's just rushed and undetailed right now.
Try it again and I hope to see the results!

3837469 I am planning on rewriting it into a longer form, and possibly adding it as a second chapter to this. And as for the Flying Machine from Gryphon the Brush Off, I was thinking of it, but I thought that would be a tad obvious so I swapped it up.

oh and gliding is defined by staying aloft using only air currents. Powered flight is not gliding.
