Those paying attention to American news the last few days probably don't need context as to why I chose today's two pieces. I'll leave my statements at that, and that a bit of catharsis does a person good.
Today's lead (and the more serious) story is Diplomacy Has Failed by single-story author Cythonna.
One of the parts of the setting I quite love is the changelings. Conceptually, I find them to be fascinating and full of potential. A literal boogeyman race, packed with flavor. They're outsiders who - because they're pathovores - are required to still participate in and closely interact with a society that understandably hates them. And post-reformation it gets even more fun because you've got all kinds of mixed feelings on both sides. It's prime material to work with.
As I've said in previous blogs, sometimes the topic to just falls into my lap.
This week's might on the surface seem to be war fics - that would be incorrect. It's more the consequences of war fics. Too damn many of the warfic crowd only care about the blind HOORAH cinematic bull, or if they do look at the consequences? The looks tend to be rather shallow and the literary equivalent of "I'm sad :( :( :(" without embracing what that means.
I've mentioned in passing previously that some of my best known stories are about Cozy Glow, and so I keep a fair tab on Cozy stories. I realized recently that I haven't done a Cozy-centric week for this blog yet - and now I figure it's time to change that with two of my absolute favorites.
So December is going to be a bit different for this blog series. While I was going back over my prepared list of stories to pull from, I realized that I'd fallen behind on what was supposed to be the backbone of this series: bringing to light authors and stories that have gotten overlooked and particularly to new blood on the site. I'd developed a backlog that was longer than I'd thought and a few of the 'new blood' authors were only new in the loosest sense anymore.
So one thing that's been low-level annoying me for a while about this series is that I do two stories a week. And, because of how things work out and some extras I've put up before, currently there's an odd total number of stories on the shelf.
It's small. It's dumb. It has no bearing on anything.
I'm doing three stories this week so it stops bothering me.
Fortunately I've got a topic that works for: the Wonderbolts.
Today's batch shares the common theme of LGBT relationships - delving a bit more deeply into the themes than the average fluffy Mane 6 ship.
Ironically, today's chosen lead story is a Mane 6 ship.
An End by Root Head is a humanized (not EQG, despite similarities) tale where, with their time in high school about to end, Fluttershy and Applejack's ships cross paths.
It's February. We all know the big holiday for this month. Half of us are sick of it already and half are trying to make fancy dinner plans. Fortunately, it also provides an easy out for theming story picks!
Top of the card today is one that has a fascinating backstory to it: Kaleidoscope by TheDriderPony.
'Tis the season for romance - unsurprisingly. With Valentine's just two days past, the theme for today's pretty obvious. And fortunately, I've got Best Pony to lean into with plenty of stories!
I'm gonna lead with 'adorable' today: Tethered-Angel and Down the Laundry Chute.
Sometimes deciding which set of stories to pick just falls into my lap and becomes obvious.
Lead this week is one that's not underappreciated - but it's one I vehemently plug when I get the chance and consider to be damn near mandatory reading for any serious reader on this site. Namely: The Choices We Make by Monochromatic.
I'm feeling like a bass drop this week, so I'm gonna launch off with a pair of DJ Pon-3/Vinyl Scratch stories this week.

Rise Again by Duck is an Anon-A-Miss fic and-- WAIT WAIT STOP NO IT'S GOOD.
A rather strong contrast in the two selections today.
First up is a rather sweet, fluffy story - Sweet Carrots by Epic Yarn.
Sooooooo the funny thing is when you take a vacation, sometimes the days sort of blend together. Did you know it's Thursday? I only just realized it's Thursday. And it's nearly Friday. Somehow I should've known #13 would mess me up.

Well now. This marks a full year of this blog series. I'll admit, it's been a fun ride so far. Having the chance to bring a little light on to some deserving stories and authors has been great, as has the excuse to re-read some of my favorites before putting them up. It's been a blast, and thank you all for joining me along the way.
So hitting blog #100 and with the two year anniversary of #104 coming up fast, I've decided to do something special and a little self-indulgent.
So back at #100, I mentioned there were stories I waffled back and forth on if they were 'too popular' to bring up and gush about. And bluntly, today's blog is pretty centered on two of the prime offenders for that attitude. Because they're both beautiful romances that are way popular, but I can't really talk about my favorite stories without mentioning them.
So to start year three, I figure I gotta lead with Best Human/Best Pony and talk Sunset Shimmer. Particularly two stories that are real favorites of mine.
The first is one I actually had pegged originally for the last few weeks' worth before deciding to hold it for this. Fallowsthorn's Time is, well. It's special.
When I came up with the idea to use the closing entries of year two to flush out stories that I was super into but felt guilty about suggesting because they're already so popular/well known, I figured it would be a chance for an easy couple of blogs and fangasm over awesome stuff. After I started the process, it turned out to be way harder: I had room for ten entries (less, after I did some theme matching), and piled up more than forty stories that fit my criteria.
