It Is Recommendsday, My Dudes #49 · 7:58pm Feb 23rd, 2022
February is the month of love, but this week is the week of wub.
...Okay, look, work with me on this. It's been a long day.
Starring this week is our favorite DJ, Vinyl Scratch. And by extension her counterpart Octavia. They're a pair I've always had a soft spot for - can't really say why, I just generally enjoy them both as a pair and individually.
Anyway! On with the show!
This week's A side is prime comedy with The Things Vinyl Drinks by everybody's favorite derp, FanOfMostEverything. While an author that needs no introduction, this piece is, well.
It's morning. Octavia is making tea for her breakfast. Vinyl is also making tea. The problem is that she's making it very badly. And Octavia knows it.
Anyone who's ever had that passive-aggressive argument with their significant other will understand this story. Everyone who loves tea will be aghast. And, I think, most people will be amused by the delightful non-verbal storytelling. It's prime FoME writing, leaning into understated wit and staring you right in the eye until you laugh. Plus the interaction speaks volumes of the sort of relationship the characters have - after all, Vinyl survives.
On the B side, we've got Erina Tail Yellow and Follow You Down.
It's morning. Octavia wakes up in Vinyl's bed. The room is filthy - but that's okay, so were they the night before. But dawn has come and the agreement before was clear: this was a one time thing. Just one night. It's just that... well, now Vinyl isn't sure she wants to commit to that.
This story's a wonderful cute bit of romantic fluff - the morning after and two characters both reveling in the glow of the previous night and trying to sort themselves out with the new day. Both Octavia and Vinyl are just so damn cute throughout.
But it's the final bit of this that's stuck with me since I first read this - it turn the story from just cute and fluffy to something special. It - like a good relationship - is about that little moment that shows something deeper. That makes it meaningful. The ending moments of this story really stood out to me like that, and for something so small? It really had a ton of impact for me.

Heh. I'm flattered to see something of mine show up on Recommendsday. Especially one of my sillier offerings.
