Sorry this one took so long! With the holidays, there were so many distractions and delays that I had a hard time finding the time to write. Fortunately, most of those delays are behind me, so I hope to be finishing chapters much more quickly. I've got so many plans...
I just read that title as "Steven Jobs" for a moment
6854855
Somebody took the Wild Wasteland trait!
Huh, is it "Not What They Seem?" Though I wonder, for which does this apply? Also, glad to see this updated.
6854864
On that note... any particular reason why "seven" is written out for this chapter, while you use simple numbers for the previous ones?
caps
Whisper seems to conspicuously forget about the one in the chamber a lot. This is going to be a climactic plot point, isn't it?
6855458
Yeah. That reason would be me being dumb...
Fixed!
6855529
I need to make a point of scouring the chapters to replace bits with caps. You wouldn't believe how many times I did that before. I guess that one slipped through.
The issues with Whisper's handling of firearms is mostly to demonstrate her skill level with them (And to show firearms being portrayed correctly). Which isn't to say that it won't be an important factor later in the story, merely that I will neither confirm nor deny it.
6855395
You are correct! Even if the hint is kind of a "well, duh" when talking about a changeling story. As for who specifically it applies to... well, I can't give away all my secrets, now can I?
6855646 Would be poor form to, and that's more the answer to look forward to.
Finally, someone who gets that suppressors aren't magic. It's nice to see someone who understands the limitations and how they work.
Noice. Wonder if they get somehow involved with whatever that mystery mare wants from Dusty.
I love this story! ....and I want more!
Starlight has embraced the same philosophy I usually do in games like this: If you need more than one shot, you're doing something wrong.
6855901
Well, this one isn't. That kind of enchanting job is expensive
6859294
I vary a lot depending on the game, but I do tend to favor the one-shot-kill weapons. Gauss rifles and AMRs all the way! Or a suppressed sniper rifle if you can be sneaky. In a game where killing the enemy is the only way to deal with them, best to do it as quickly and from as far away as possible. Would be different if suppression was a consideration, but there are few games where that comes into play.
6855901
Yeah, I wanted to get the details of firearms and combat right. They're not necessarily a huge factor in the story, and I'm sure some readers wouldn't notice the little details I put in, but I thought it'd be nice for those who know how these things work.
6859294 sorry didn't explain myself super well. I meant it's not like, say, Fallout 4 where you slap a suppressor on a hyper velocity Gauss rifle and it's silent. Suppressors don't work like that.
6859414 I appreciate the effort. I'm half surprised that you didn't get someone saying that suppressors make guns completely silent because that's what they do in video games.
6860342
I was just being funny. I know how suppressors work, I was just pointing out that in this setting, a suppressor can actually be magic, although that kind of enchanting is probably going to be rare, and you'd still need sub-sonic ammo for it to be effective.
6859414
*Equips Fat-Man* You don't need a suppressor if everyone's too dead to listen
Putting down the lame... cart . Well that was wholly unnecessary. Frustration, I gather?
I got a feeling that'll be a running theme... the Wasteland doesn't have a habit of giving people a couple of days off
Oh gods
Psssh. That was somewhat uncalled for. Not like he was hitting on her or anything
Heh. Looks like Starlight is worried about what he said, though.
Yes, that seems like a constant in any newcomer
Heh. The disadvantage of that analytical mindset.
Yeah, if it ever comes to that, that'll be a whole other can of worms
There's also food. You do kinda need to eat. Not to mention, healing potions.
Um. One could argue that using a melee weapon then would be the choice where you can both stay alive and remain disguised
Well, it suits your sneaky style
Heh. Kinda saw that coming.
Hollowpoint. Ew.
What does he care? Their partnership pretty much already ended. He could perfectly go on alone from there
Well, concerning "being sneaky" she's technically a professional, yes. She just never had to expand her skillset into weapons territory
Exactly what I was thinking... which makes me suspect he is considering a more prolongued partnership
Heh. Yeah. Guns are loud.
Well, holy yikes. They got themselves an energy weapon sniper mare.
Oh, harsh, dude!
Hah
A cannon turret?
I somehow doubt there'd still be any kind of "healthy food" mindset in the wastes... I'm fairly sure that stuff only starts applying once food stops being an actual daily concern.
...wut?
Remarks and corrections:
> We put our commandeered wagon out of our misery on the slope below Gemstone.
Shouldn't that be "out of [its] misery"? Or are you deliberately twisting it to mean they had tons of trouble with it?
> Of course, you three have probably had a long day, I won't keep you up any longer.
That's technically three sentences. That should be a full stop after "Of course", and a semicolon instead of a comma before "I won't".
Ohh. ROT13. I see
6860870
Food kind of got subsumed into the general "supplies" that they'd get regularly as needed, and which Starlight has been handling as the one who carries the caps. This was shopping for special items.
As for not thinking of healing potions... Whisper is still kind of new to all of this. But hopefully Starlight will take care of that.
The kind of "excessively desperate" situations she's thinking of are ones where both her automatic rifle and her pistol have proven insufficient. If she can't deal with a threat with those, her chances of successfully dealing with it with a melee weapon she has no training or experience with is probably pretty close to nil.
To be fair, it's a lot easier to hit distant targets when you have a laser-like weapon that doesn't have to worry about bullet drop, travel time, wind, etc. It's basically just putting the crosshairs directly over the target and pulling the trigger. She's packing a high-power hitscan weapon in a world where most shooters use projectile weapons! Dusty was possibly being diplomatic by not pointing that out.
About the most she has to worry about is atmospheric conditions diffusing the beam, but with the Lancer packing so much power per shot, it's got to be pretty bad before that becomes a significant factor.
Not for most, no. Starlight has a bit of it, though, for various reasons.
Yup, the latter. I just liked the play on the common phrase.
6860906
I couldn't resist. I might do some more, too. Nothing too spoilery. Heck, I'd like to keep it to stuff that just raises more questions!
6860789
No one can sound the alarm if there's no one left to sound the alarm!
6861454
She still hit a tree the rest could barely see in the distance, though
6861540
Oh, of course. It's not quite as impressive as hitting it with a ballistic weapon, where bullet drop can be well over ten meters, and even a gentle breeze can put the bullet meters off-target, but it's still some pretty stable and precise aim. She is a good shot, at least with the weapons she's familiar with.
6860789 yeah, but i should have clarified because your absolutely right it could be magic based. You could enchant the ammo to break up the shockwave, but that requires some serious enchanting and hardware that probably wouldn't be available in the wasteland.
6862474
I actually think it would be easier to just use low-velocity, extra-sharp-tipped ammo with an enchanted suppressor, rather than supersonic ammo and enchanting each bullet, since you're only going to be using each bullet once. Although I seem to remember there being a zebra assault rifle that set bullets on fire as you fired them in FO:E?
At any rate, yeah, this is all a bit pointless to discuss since this kind of fancy equipment isn't going to be something you just find laying about. ...maybe in later chapters, though? :P
6863780 it's pointless but fun. you lose A LOT of energy with subsonics. A 62 gr 5.56 round has 87 ft-lbf of energy at mach 1 and over 1300 ft-lbf at 3100 ft/s (sorry for the units, didn't feel like converting). That's a massive difference in stopping power. Plus there are other negatives for subsonics as well. increased drop, increased time to target, more environmental effects. So given the choice, i'd enchant the rounds. Although it'd be really expensive to do so. The zebra rifle did enchant the bullets on the fly. forgot about that. There are advantages to both systems. Enchanted rifle would be way more expensive than a regular one, but ammo is cheaper and more common. That being said, enchanted ammo essentially allows any gun to have that function (with a suppressor of course).
Hah, I was wondering if you'd depict how suppressors work correctly and I wasn't disappointed. Good job.
Cya
Raziel-chan
really? lmao that just happened... wow
I'm happy to see you made an effort to depict suppressors with more realism than is normally done. And the weapon function descriptions in general, come to that.
They should tell those two gear heads about the autocarriage they found.
C'mon, don't be like that~
You forgot to make a new paragraph for the new speaker here. A minor, but very noticeable, mistake. I'm suprised no one else pointed it out after all this time. It was quite jarring, actually.
Anyway, so far this story is great! The only reason I'm even reading it is because you wrote it (I don't like very many FO: Equestria stories). I quite enjoy your other stories. I'll be reading the rest over the next few days.
The inner gun nut in me is insanely happy right now.
Even if he tried*
Fuck yeah! The Creed lives on in our little assassin!
While somewhat anticlimactic, the scenes were intense and kept me at the edge of my seat. Xd
Something tells me some really exciting stuff is about to happen.
Translation please.

Or folks that don't wanna go deaf.
While there are a lot of gun facts in this chapter do I only wanna point one gun out, chekhov's gun! We will see more to Dusty and the next quest will be an escort mission for the mare who are smelling of caps, mark my words! I have read enough FoE to know that there are no such thing as a temporary party member, or side mission not getting completed!
Nitpicks:
"We put our commandeered wagon out of our misery on the slope below Gemstone." Is it not normally "its"?
"and as much as I like her" Its one of those weird present tense (Starlight still being alive and Whisper still liking her) and past tense weird situations, especially when the sentence before and after is in past tense.
10545272
At least it's better than the games where the side missions are all that get completed! "Huh, what's all this talk about some Shaun? Ohhhh, right, my kid. I was supposed to rescue him."
Normally, yes. It's a play on the saying to emphasize just how much of a pain in the ass the wagon had been.
