Twilight Sparkle, Princess of Friendship, and her friends (minus one obvious apple) are preparing for the annual memorial, when an unexpected castle guest threatens to disrupt the peace in Ponyville forever.

'Calling Equestrial Rescue, we need your help. My name is Bright Star, I'm the acting director of STEED. We have a number of ongoing missions, our most recent being the establishment of a mobile research lab on the planet Marecury. For the last two months the crew have been in constant communication with our main hub back here in Equestria, but about three hours ago we lost contact. The lab is a mobile platform in constant motion to stay out of sunlight, as the heat of daylight on Marecury would destroy it in minutes. Our satellites show it has stopped moving. Only you can get there before the next sunrise.'

It had been 1,500 years ago since Princess Celestia and Princess Luna attempted to defeat the queen of Unicornia but before they could, she cast a spell to cause it to disappear. Unicornia is back now and so is its queen. Princess Celestia has tasked Twilight and her friends with reuniting her with its leader but this will lead to so much more than a mere reunion.

'Calling Equestrial Rescue, this is General Dapper of the Indoneighsian Army. We have been assisting with the evacuation of all settlements in the vicinity of Mount Kraken, a volcano that has been ejecting ash for several hours now. The cloud already covers an area hundreds of miles wide, but we expect a full-scale eruption very soon. We have had to abandon our rescue efforts due to increasing seismic activity, but there is still a small group of ponies unaccounted for. Our reports indicate they were hiking near the mountain, but we can find no sign of them. Time is short, can you help us?'

Twilight's power, along with that of Celestia, Luna, and Cadance, has been claimed by Tirek. Drunk on power, the demon-centaur is unleashing destruction upon Equestria, his reign of terror just beginning.

But there is hope. A crystalline chest, a gift from the Tree of Harmony, able to be opened by six keys. Keys which Twilight has now claimed the last of. All they can do is hope, hope that whatever is contained inside the chest is enough to stop Tirek.

And then something goes wrong ...

We were called to evacuate the passengers due to engine trouble which was being exacerbated by typhoon-force weather conditions, but the engines exploded and the ship turned onto its side before we could finish our operation. 'Calling Equestrial Rescue, this is Deepsea Echo laboratory currently operating out of the Mareiana Trench. We were hit by some unpredicted seismic activity and in our attempt to evacuate, one of the escape pods malfunctioned. To our best understanding the docking clamps have failed to release fully but the water seal between the doors has breached, so we're trapped inside the pod. The lab is at a depth of six point eight nautical miles and the pod only has an oxygen supply to last us a few hours. Please, Equestrial Rescue if you can hear this message... help us. You're our only hope.'
