A little story I used to put my headcanon about how time works between the main series and the Equestria Girls sub-series. It's a discussion of why Sunset is so young despite being older than Princess Twilight, as well as why timeliness don't always match up between the two.

Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle, one a student of Celestia, the other just getting started, are yanked from their homes by a mysterious magical mirror. Now trapped on Earth, their lives forever altered, they do their best to cope. To learn. To join Starfleet, and, someday, to return to the home they lost.

That all changed a few months after Princess Luna's return from her thousand year imprisonment on the moon. When she returned, something came back with her that slowly started to poison and corrupt the nature of magic, sowing threads of distrust between pony and zebra kind. Eventually, just as it had been born, the magical land of Equestria would die in the rainbow glow of magical energy. Our story, however, takes us far from the deadly wasteland to an island paradise as of yet untouched by the ravages of war. This island, a relic of the old world, has begun to take on a life of its own and is threatening to unleash its deadly secrets upon an unsuspecting world. Now it's up to small band of friends to prevent this horror from spreading; whether they like it or not, their fate has been inextricably tied to the fate of the wasteland itself.

Rarity is a sophisticated mare well versed in the topics of fashion, generosity, and of love. Well, in this universe, that last one may not hold true. In fact, she's pretty oblivious. Maybe she's just over-worked, maybe she doesn't read enough fan-fiction. Either way, there's a lot going on in Ponyville that she doesn't seem to notice.

Equestria is sometimes referred to as the land of second chances, all the more so after Luna's return. Songs are sung of Princess Celestia's benevolence and forgiveness, and legends are told that she can look directly into a creature's heart and see whether there is good in them. Others whisper that she is soft, and weak, and will let anypony off with a slap on the wrist.

Neither is quite true, but there was quite a firestorm of rumours when she decided to set Discord free. Many would like to know what precisely she was thinking to attempt to put a leash on a being who could plunge the land into chaos with a casual thought, but Celestia has kept the reasons close to her chest.

She's pretty sure nopony would believe her anyway. Sometimes the truth is stranger than rumours.
