This story is a sequel to The Silent Wind

Twilight has awoken in an abandoned world, her memories seemingly scoured from her mind, while the sun and moon's magic is slowly dying.

And yet throughout it all, it feels like the heaviest burden are the wings on her back.

This story was a gift for my mate Zon, and he requested a fanfic of one of his fanfics.

NOTE: This story is a Silent Wind sequel, however this is not the whole story. This is also a sequel to Shadow Within. Reading this other fic first will make certain events in this fic more understandable, but, choosing to unspoiler that link and read the other fic first will also spoil the reveal of this in this story. The story itself is comprehensible either way, so the choice is left up to the reader.

The story is finished and will be published daily until finished.

Thanks to all who helped, particularly Drider and Bike without whom I wouldn't have worked out how to publish

Twilight is having a difficult time adjusting to being an alicorn. Everything is changing, and it's nothing like she expected. She's wanted this all her life - so why is she always turning into a monster in her nightmares?

Her friends keep telling her that it can't be that bad, and whatever changes may come, being a princess is worth it. Especially Rarity, who looks at her a little differently now that she has wings and a title. But if Celestia won't tell her what it's really like being an alicorn, what else is she hiding?

Written as a gift for Seer, who deserves all the RariTwi in the world. Cover art by the fantastic Shaslan.

Massive thanks to all my prereaders - I never would have written this story without you.

One thousand years ago, Princess Luna fell to her corruption. Driven to madness by loneliness, shunned by the very subjects she strived to protect, and by jealousy of her ever-brighter sister.

In her desire to be seen by her subjects, Nightmare Moon brought about an eternal night, that they might finally view her as equal to the beloved Princess of the Sun.

Princess Celestia was forced to confront her, and they fought. Nightmare Moon was outmatched, and banished.

Five hundred years ago, Princess Celestia fell to her own corruption, born of grief at the loss of her sister, and rage at her own immortality as she watched those she cared about crumble to dust, while she remained, unchanging.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, the last free country on Equus fell to the newest and only empire on the planet:

The Solar Imperium, ruled with an iron hoof by Queen Daybreaker, Goddess of the Sun.

Today, Princess Luna returned from the moon.

It's going to be the two of them together, for the rest of their lives. Riko Saikawa knows that. Just her and Kanna -- well, all right: her beloved's mother can visit every so often, the maid's probably coming along, there's nothing wrong with Miss Lucoa or Mr. Fafnir, and if Ilulu-san was maybe seven years younger, Saikawa might have fallen in love with her first. But ever since that first moment when Kanna entered Class 3-2, Saikawa's known. It's destiny. And anyone who might get in their way has to be stopped.

Today was supposed to be their playdate. And Kanna wants to show some stupid foreign kid around the city. That dumb boy doesn't deserve any time with her!

So what's the best way to get rid of this 'Spike'?

After learning of Celestia's plan to have Twilight one day replace them both, Luna points out that it'd be unreasonable to give her both of their responsibilities. Celestia thus recommends that Luna finds a pupil of her own to one day replace her.
A concerning encounter in a dream leads Luna to hunt down the mare behind the encounter, Starlight Glimmer. Unbeknownst to either of them at the time, this slightly crazed mare would become the student Luna was searching for.
But is Luna ready to teach? Is Starlight ready to learn? Maybe with some help from Celestia, Twilight, and her friends, everything will turn out okay, and they'll both be able to confront their inner turmoil. or maybe it'll consume them, and all of Equestria with it.

Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. Equestria's two greatest rulers, goddesses of the sun and the moon, who ruled over the country for millennia upon millennia.

Everypony knows that Twilight handled the rising and falling of both the sun and moon upon the princesses' retirement. But exactly who took over the role after she became nothing more than a faint memory? And can they keep up the role?

There are six pony virtues. Six. And fortunately for the pickup artists, confidence stallions, and desperate of the world, there's also a lot of sapients who can't count that high. Princess Luna's Return produced a few side effects, and one of the more consistently annoying is a never-ending parade of those who claim to be the hitherto-unknown virtue of This Is Worth Some Free Drinks. Others take it further.

Division Seven is an international, multispecies effort, created in an attempt to find and discipline those charlatans. And ideally, to do so before something... happens.

The planet has strange ways of reacting to the presence of true Bearers.

Imagine how it might deal with some of the fakes...
