An idea I had about Fimfiction reviews and a Chrome extension · 5:57pm Mar 28th, 2021
I'm making this a blog post mostly just to see if something like this already exists, because if it did I would probably use it. Here's the gist:
- A server/database out there on the web that simply has a collection of links to reviews for stories on this site.
- A Chrome extension that queries that database whenever you navigate to a story page and gives you a list of links to reviews, if any.
- The ability for users to submit links to reviews (but it would start with a hefty collection scraped from existing sources). This would probably be on the server/website, at least at first, for security purposes. The links would be submitted to a queue and approved manually.
That's it. As an author that has a handful of story reviews randomly around the internet, this is something I'd appreciate, as there are some times when I stumble upon reviews or readings when their creators don't always leave a message or comment. And come to think of it, this would be useful for voice readings as well. But in general, it'd be pretty sweet as a reader to find a new story and see this stuff automatically pop up right on the page via the browser extension. The site could also have a front-end that shows some stuff too, or have the ability to search by author, etc.
Thoughts? Has someone else done this already? Is it dubious in some way, legal or tech? For this online persona I mostly just present myself as a writer, but I do think I could program something like this, and I'd be interested in others' thoughts. This is making me wish it was a feature of the site itself.
Also as a note, there is a large Google spreadsheet that has a collection of reviews here, but it's not a database and might be difficult to query. Although having said that, the browser extension could just look at that thing. But I didn't make it, and it seems too fragile.
One thing I did notice on this site is that you can see if there are any blog posts with your story tagged in them, but I don't think this is widely used to tie reviews to stories. Oh, and it's only for your own stories, so nevermind lol.
Oh, and the story statistics page does show referrals to stories, but the links are just to the domain, not the precise URL.
