Change of Pace Submissions Closed! · 1:23pm Nov 1st, 2020

Time!

If your story is still going through submissions or there's just been some kind of unfortunate delay, let me know and I'll sort you out. As of now, however, the entire world should be entering the 1st of November. Hope you all had a spooky Halloween!

What happens now is that me and the other judges get through reading the entries. Not entirely sure how long this will take us, but given that there was only a modest output of stories (10 entries), I wouldn't imagine it'll take more than a week or two, schedules willing. We'll then initiate judging, which again, due to the limited number of stories to read, will be done fairly organically with each judge providing input and opinions on both the entries and the rankings.

The contest results will then be announced and I'll contact the winning entries to send youse that sweet, delicious prize money. Like I mentioned in the original post, my preferred method of payment is paypal, but I can do my best to be flexible if that doesn't work for you. I've been known to send folks gift steam games and stuff on occasion way back when for other contests.

As for you, good job! Give yourselves a hearty pat on the back. Not that many folks were able to provide entries, despite having absolute freedom on content and a fairly substantial prize as bait incentive. That should say something about how not really that many folks practice this kind of thing, despite being on a site dedicated to writing and reading. My hope is that this will help give people some insight on what it's like to write to restrictions like this as well as help spread some good skills. I'd be very interested to hear about how you found writing your entries!

In any case, you should all be proud that you've made it this far. I chatted to a fair few folks who found this surprisingly challenging.

Cheerio, and I'll see you all soon.

Thanks for running the contest! I honestly really enjoyed the structural challenge, it made for a very different writing experience than content-based constraints. Excited to check out what other people did with the prompt.

5390024 That's the dream!

I tested this myself a while ago and found it to be pretty much what I expected; easy enough to get an outline that fit within the gross word-limit, but then a more heavy editing phase to move bits and pieces around to fit the individual breaks. The middle one I found to be particularly pesky, which might be due to the content I picked.

Of course when I tested it I also tested making it content-appropriate to the show as well, so literally just an episode transported into prose using the method I described in the WaE group.

None of my ideas really came together. Still, I did cook up a lot of ideas. They may not fit the prompt's mold perfectly, but I do plan on seeing them through. Thanks for the inspiration!

5390029 Very good! I'm glad you got some good ideas out of this.

My hope is that even if folks didn't necessarily get to have something finished, the act of trying to piece it all together would have been at least valuable and insightful.

Just checking in to see how soon you guys think you'll have contest results in? Would love to hear some feedback from the judges, if nothing else. :twilightsheepish: I understand we're all busy this time of year though, so no worries if it's taking longer than expected.

5405126 Pretty soon, I should think! We got slowed down a bit by some irl problems, but we're currently nearly finished with the preliminary ranking. (Then it's discussion and locking our decisions in), so I can't imagine it'll be long now.

We've already had some interesting chats about how people seem to have responded to the limitations of the story. It's been educational. We'll be getting more into that when we're ready to publish results, though.
