I'm looking for a song to use in an upcoming fic · 9:20pm Jun 23rd, 2020

I'm working on "My World Is Empty Without You" (with help from my volunteer "voice of Fluttershy")--the conclusion to the series of stories that began with "The Perfect Little Village of Ponyville". The series has been building up the character of Vinyl Scratch, giving her the ability to use music to shape the reality of the [spoilers] ...dreams she's trapped in.

And now I'm at the climax of that story. Vinyl is going to unleash her epic song to save the day and...I forgot what song I was going to use. I knew what it was eight years ago when I first planned out this whole series, but I never got around to writing it down...

Anyway, I thought I'd use crowd-sourcing to see if we can come up with a song even more epic than whatever song it was that I forgot.

Here's what I'm looking for:

  • It's got to be epic. My mind naturally drifts towards Classical and movie soundtracks, but if you're got a rock track to suggest, I'm open.
  • It's got to feature a voice that either sounds like it could be Vinyl's, or that I can easily re-imagine being Vinyl's. If it can be sung by a pair of Vinyls, that's even better. (Can't tell you why--spoilers.)
  • The point of the song is to rally a group of ponies (plus one imaginary dragon) from a position of hopelessness to fight an epic fight against a god-like foe.

As far as tone goes, what I'm looking for is something like the theme from Crimson Tide, except there is no singing there. (Well, there's a bunch of "Ahh"s, but come on.) Actually, if you crossed that with the "St. Crispin's Day" speech from Shakespeare's Henry V---but, you know, half the length and not delivered by a king--that would be just about perfect.

P.S. I did manage to find something at the last minute, but I'm not completely satisfied with it: "Never Back Down" by Two Steps from Hell. The lyrics are a bit simplistic and are dominated by the music. At least, I think that's why I don't like it 100%. My taste in music, like in most things, is so idiosyncratic even I don't understand it. I'll stick that in there as a temp track while I wait to see if this post generates any ideas I irrationally decide to agree with.

Here's one thing my own research over the past couple of days did reveal: most epic music composed in the past thirty years can be grouped into two points of view: The first is that society is in the grip of corrupt and evil forces, and only the protagonist has a chance of breaking the power of these villains robed in titles of legitimacy to save humanity from itself. The second view is that society is ripe for the taking, and is currently run by incompetents; the so-called "hero" is the individual willing to break humanity, to make them slaves for their own good.

Is it any wonder why I'm a brony if these are the most-popular alternatives?

My story is more of a "inherently-decent society being threated by a single being of immense power, and that society's only hope lies in a small group of dedicated friends currently deprived of their usual set of super-powerful accessories" sort of tale.

And no, it's not just a rehash of the Season 4 finale--I've got a singing Vinyl Scratch in mine, so there!

If I may make a suggestion?

The voice may be an issue, but it seems to check a number of boxes.

Well song lyrics are verboten so the point is moot.

What about Knights of Cydonia? That’s pretty epic

I intend to change the lyrics enough to get away with it.

So what this song appears to be telling me is that pegasi and earth ponies are completely worthless. :ajbemused:

Neat song though.

Yeah, I thought that might be a complication. :twilightblush:
