The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » Watching, external accounts, read stories and sad tag · 11:26pm Sep 12th, 2011

Bunch of new things I've done over the past couple of days. And Fluttershy! In socks!

Watching: You can now watch other users! It's a bit like DA. Just click the watch button at the right hand side of the user bar to watch, and click again to stop if you want. People you're watching show up on your user page, as do people following you.

External accounts: You can now add links to various different accounts around the interwebs to your account. Just go to edit account and add them at the bottom. They will show up on your user page too.

Read stories: The browse page now has the option to filter out stories you haven't read any chapters of.

Sad tag: Was requested for ages so, here it is!

Also this remix is freaking amazing so I'm linking it.

Nice update.

Fluttershy in a jumper AND socks! DO WANT.

I made the first Sad tag, weee. >:3

Great update!

And now I'm curious. Just what's the difference between "sad" and "tragedy"? I'm so confused! :raritycry:

194 You're not alone.

I got an idea regarding tags (and considering this post is relating to the new "sad" tag, it should fit).:moustache:
I'm often attracted to looking at crossover stories. However, occasionally I see a story that isn't clear about the crossover. I was wondering if it would be possible to add a text box for stories with the crossover tag just to point out what they are crossing over. I do know that there are some writers who use this to their advantage, so I think it best to have it as optional.

Is there still a "FAQ" somewhere on here?

Could you further define "really gory"? Like, would Half-Life be considered "really gory"?

knighty
Site Owner

No. Fluttershy cutting herself open and removing her intestines is really gorey :P

It's a bit of a grey area to be honest, I'd rather just let people interpret it sensibly than draw up a huge list of things that contribute to exactly what is and isn't.

Sadness abounds! (Does this mean we should ask for a [Happy] tag?)

Come to think of it... is there a tag guide somewhere? Or shall we be deferring to EqD's?

Hey Knighty, when I published the 8th Chapter of my story it didn't want to come up on the recently update list on the tool bar at the top no matter how many times I published and unpublished the chapter like I usually do. :fluttercry:

knighty
Site Owner

I've made it so you can only bump once per day. It was too exploitable otherwise.

But I didn't publish my last chapter today. I do one every day. My 8th one was today's. :fluttershysad:

Now I'm gonna have to stay up till midnight to see if I can get it out there

knighty
Site Owner

It's based on 24 hours. So you might have just missed it. I could reduce it to 12 hours maybe.

Hmm... Well I finished the 7th at the dead of night. That might have been it. But I'm unsure of what the website's time zone is. Maybe I thought I finished early but then it was actually too late on the actual server time? Eh, whatever the case, I'm just gonna wait it out till midnight, Either way, I made a 1k word filler compared to the usual 2.5k everyday stuff. :applejackunsure: dang it, now I have to finish it.

Maybe implement the website's server time? Just so it won't get all confusing and shtuff. :twilightsheepish:

Come to think of it, a Happy tag would be nice.

Just curious. How is it that I have "4 views" of an unpublished chapter?

knighty
Site Owner

Mmmm well, it's not supposed to count author views so I'm not sure unless you linked to someone?

Nope. Didn't link to anyone. Just been seeing that number slowly go up over the past few weeks.

Doesn't matter too much since I'm practically finished with it now, but still...

"View Mature"
DOES THAT MEAN WE CAN POST CLOP NOW :yay: :yay: :yay:

Speaking of which, what would implied sex fall under? Do I go with Teen or leave it as Everyone?

knighty
Site Owner

Teen probably. Just use your judgement really.

Could you add a button on people's profile page to send them a private message?

Now this is just plain amusing.

Apparently one of my fics was looked at on the 8th, 12th, and 13th of this month.

What's amusing about this is I CREATED the story on the 14th! Like...today!

:derpyderp2::derpyderp2::derpyderp2::derpyderp2::derpyderp2:..........................................................:pinkiecrazy:

Comments and Private Messages could use "Preview" buttons.

Do you want me to use Coordinated Universal Time for the statistic dates, or is local time okay?

knighty
Site Owner

Local should be fine. It's not gonna be out by much.

knighty, you's crazy , bro.

Also, you probably know this already, but sorting by word count is broken.

Gets back a database error: "Unknown column 'num_words' in 'order clause'"

I have a request.
Can you add some indication of the age of a chapter/story to it's page? (like the date it was published/submitted for instance)

Hey, Knighty, I love the site already, but I have a request for some adjustments to the chapter edit interface; specifically, document saving behavior.
My FiMFic blog post on the subject

I discovered an interesting "bug" on the site. Not sure how easy this would be to fix.

Steps to reproduce (performed in Google Chrome):

1) Navigate to the "edit" mode for a story.
2) Hit "Ctrl+F" to go into search-mode.
3) Click in the editable space to give the "text area" focus again.
4) Type the letter "i", or "u", or "b". Notice the tags appear without needing to hold down Ctrl.

If you hit "Ctrl+[letter]", the problem goes away.

My guess is that there's a flag being set that says whether "Ctrl" is down, which isn't being reset when the browser's "search" functionality takes focus away from the text area. Perhaps there's a way to check for the key being down directly, rather than relying on that flag.

336
That's because it uses javascript.
With javascript, it's usually easier to just make something invisible than to remove it (if it's a mouse-over thing, etc).
Try doing the same on any other Web2.0-heavy website.

On the topic of Web2.0, I think it's about time the EqD crew migrate to [anything that isn't blogger].
Hell, it would be awesome if you, knightly, could design "EqD2".
EqD is a big site now, having 50 million views and all.
Also trudging through bloggers messy automatically-generated HTML gives me nightmares.

Sir knighty, I don't know how to reach you via e-mail, I think my message hadn't gotten through to knighty@fimfiction.net. I wanted to ask for your help in organizing similar site for russian MLP-community. :pinkiesad2:

I've noticed that the site lists all chapters, even unpublished ones, on the front page post. Like I have a fic with four published chapters and two unpublished ones and it lists it as having 6 chapters. Do you think it could be changed so that only published chapters are counted?

Also, is there any way of deleting unpublished chapters? I've been trying to remove one I don't need anymore (I was using it for notes), but I just can't figure out how to get rid of the darn thing.

I love this website. It's terrible at downloading fanfictions, but it's great for hosting and distributing. The only important issue I have is being able to edit and delete blogs. I want to edit one blog and delete two others, but I can't get it to work.

Oh, and one nitpicky thing. Could you alter the code of 'Edit Story'? While it is definitely a great feature, it would be nicer if the button 'Edit Story' within the 'Edit Story' page was changed to 'Save Changes'. In addition, it would be better if I was redirected back to my fiction's page when I did so. I could provide you with an image if you don't understand what I've asked.

Could you please include in your FAQ when to use each tag? For example, I don't know when to use "Alternate Universe".

How do you read the stories on here? I clicked on this one and no story showed up?
