A new take on writing · 6:28pm Dec 17th, 2018
Hi, it's been a while.
So I started reading A Song of Ice and Fire and was kind of enamoured with how much detail was stuffed into every square inch of every page, and realized how much I missed writing like that. I love writing lengthy descriptions. In fact, one of my unposted and unfinished stories was done specifically as an experiment to see if I could write a story with almost no dialogue, and it worked out quite well. Of course, that particular one needs rewriting since I wrote it ages ago. Anyway, reading these books I decided to try and emulate GRRM's style and ended up with an opening chapter 3000 words long that covers less than an hour of in-story time. For me that's saying something considering I used to skip over massive amounts of necessary detail in my early days of writing.
That said, I might have gone a little too far over the other end. This story I'm writing is meant to be the opening of my Triad Verse saga, after all, and it would be annoying if readers switched off due to a lack of apparent stuff happening.
My new story is called Moondust, and it is set three weeks after Nightmare Moon's defeat. Luna's return has caused havoc, and Twilight is still living in Canterlot while her new home in Ponyville is finished up, though she would much rather just continue with her studies and wait for it all to blow over. Of course, the thing staring down at everyone from space means "normal" won't be returning any time soon.
See you in the new year!
