Not since Donald Trump has a singular figure polarized so many people against each other. Thank god she (he?) isn't real, or else the poor thing would receive death threats. I'm of course speaking of Bowsette, the Bowser-Peach hybrid which somehow exists. She's come to kidnap herself.

This character was born from a hypothetical situation in which the Super Crown, used to create Peach-Toad hybrid Toadette, is used instead to fuse Browser and Peach. This page explains it rather well.
The Mario fandom has been split between people who like or love Bowsette, and those who dislike or hate her. I don't have a side in this whole thing. I'm... wait for it... neutral. Shocking, I know! I think some of the artwork is cool, but I'm not into pron and my Google filter is set to SFW. Additionally, I roll my eyes everytime I hear the word Waifu. That's pathetic.
That said, why do some people hate the made-up character? To not like, sure; you don't have to like everything. On Fimfic for instance, I don't really hate anything, because I know the stuff that I dislike isn't real and I can avoid it. There are things I like and even love, but hate is silly. For Bowsette, I think that most of the anger is probably unwarranted. Here are the reasons that some people hate Bowsette, at least the main ones.
1. That she's in a lot of porn. Well, Mario porn already existed well before Bowsette. There were plenty of fans who wanted to see Mario's sweaty Italian junk, or find out if Peach's breasts were really just giant peaches. To hate the Bowsette character because she appears in smutty pictures isn't really a good reason. You'd have to hate every main character. In fact, you'd have to hate them more, because there's way more porn of them.
2. Because she shouldn't exist and is stupid. A hybrid of two of the most opposite characters in Super Mario is indeed out there. But... this is Mario. The same series where the titular character fuses with a raccoon, where he turns into a metal man just like the bad guy in Terminator II, and he is inexplicably Italian in a fantasy realm that is not of this world. Bowsette seems pretty standard fare.
3. Because she's a woman who's being objectified. This is similar to #1, except that this complaint is lodged by feminists. But these feminists would've been upset about the stereotypical "male hero rescues princess" trope that was in Mario the whole time. Bowsette is essentially turning that trope on its head because this time she is the villain, I guess. She doesn't really have a story line so it's hard to say. I'm sure that many fan fictions will be written where she isn't objectified at all.
The Mario Fandom has descended into bickering that is usually reserved for the Sonic Fandom, which is drama central 24/7. It's sad, really, because before this whole thing they mostly had their shit together. I still like the Mario games just like I still like Sonic games, but I don't and will not associate with either of the fandoms.

I'm not sure about dumber, but that's more about both cases of bickering being too stupid for me to care about than anything else.

Yeah, psychology is what it is so the same patterns repeat over and over again. The details may change, but people are people regardless of era, culture, language, gender, age, favorite color, race, preferred pet, sexual orientation, what side of toast to butter, and so on.
I just like my wholesome content, and that has come with this wave. So it's a-ok in my book.
There's a really cool comic I saw that I want to see a continuation of. It's so damn wholesome.
I find the comics people write fun. One had a boo, wishing to feel again, using the crown to grant its wish. Another had Bowsette on Mario in bed, Peach had walked in, throws her crown to knock the power up off bowser, leaving the two in an awkward pose. A third had Bowsette starring at herself in the mirror and Bowser jr walks in, making everything hella’ awkward. They run the gamut of feelz-y to funny to nearly pornographic(I’m sure some cross that line too) but i’ve never understood why some people think they should have the right to dictate what others create. I’ll yay or nay on it, but I usually don’t say “never do this again”.
That being said, this is actually the second time we’ve had a Peach/Bowser hybrid wave this year.
The only debate is blonde vs redhead.

• People who are sick of the “spam”. Because it blew up and hit so hard it’s everywhere. To some extent I can sympathise with these people over this, but the frothing‐at‐mouth reactions of some of them is hilarious and it’s honestly hard to resist the urge to troll them.
• People who have had too much S.J.W. pro‐LGBT/anti-straight propaganda rammed down their throats and now crusade against everything that’s “gay”. These I can empathise with, but feel no sympathy for over this; Bowsette is an entirely organic meme, not S.J.W. propaganda pushing an agenda that goes far beyond tolerance.

It's interesting to see the characters' motivations explored this way. Bowser kidnapping Peach because he loved her, Mario feeling spurned by Peach, and Peach not wanting to display any sort of feelings towards Mario because she needed him to continue what he was doing. Hopefully the comic will continue.
