On the Ending of "Even in Other Worlds" and Nova Shine's Future · 1:49pm Apr 24th, 2018
What's going on, guys.
So I've been doing a lot of thinking lately. We're coming up on the fifth anniversary of Apprentice's ending, and a few days later, Worlds' publish date. And even though I've gotten 18 chapters in (not including April Fools specials), the ending still feels a bit distant. Not too distant, it is within sight, but distant all the same.
It took me four and a half years to get this far. Of course, during that time, I was writing Starbound, the Nutcracker Prince for a short time,Apprentice's rewrite, and the letdown that was Forces of Darkness. And that's also on top of finishing up college (I had to cut back on writing after I had a particularly poor semester, so that's why my writing output went from about a chapter every two weeks at the beginning of 2013 to one every couple of months come 2014). And then once college was finished, I had a job at AT&T that sucked away all my free time, all my motivation, and so on.
Thankfully, I'm in a far better place with better hours and I'm a lot happier. My writing output has also increased as well; I seem to have hit a stride between the two-weeks-per-chapter output of 2013 and the one-every-few-months of 2014, since it seems now I'm able to churn out one chapter per month between all my stories. I've toyed with the idea of setting aside one hour specifically for writing. One hour usually equates to about 1000 words on my end, so if I were to do that, I'd be churning out chapters every two weeks just like old times, and it isn't an impossible task.
If I were to do that, I'd feel a lot more comfortable about how quickly I could get stuff out, but as it stands right now, with how long it's taken me to get this far and my current output, I am strongly considering ending Nova Shine's story once Worlds is finished.
I'm well aware Nova isn't some ultra-popular character across the fandom like Littlepip from Fallout Equestria, so a number of you are probably thinking "Oh well, another one may be going," but I know some of you have followed me for years and would want to know, however few of you there are.
Now, the reason for this is because Worlds is supposed to only be the second story out of five for Nova. The third and fourth were going to be shorter (almost a single story between them, but with a definite beginning, middle, and end for both of them), but the fifth was going to be longer than both Apprentice and Worlds. And there was also a midquel between Apprentice and Worlds that I wanted to do from the get-go, but never really got around to (though that idea came back after the 2017 movie, since it gave me things that could tie in). So I've done far less than how much I've wanted over the last few years.
It's actually been in consideration for some time. I wrote "Knight Versus King" specifically to wrap up the Sombra end of things in case I did decide not to continue Worlds, so that Sombra would have been killed off and that particular plotline would have a conclusion instead of just being a hanging thread. And when I outlined the remaining chapters a couple of weeks ago, I tailored the ending to be a final ending, but if I wanted to continue, I could add one last epilogue chapter that leads into the sequel story to that.
So, to sum up, I'm considering ending Nova's story once Worlds is done. Haven't made a decision yet, but I'm strongly leaning that way unless I somehow start churning out chapters again.
Anyway, I wanted to get that off my chest so I can get back to writing horse words. Worlds Chapter 19 is in progress, but the new chapter of Starbound will come first.
Rytex out. Have a good day!
