On the Future of "Society as We Know It" · 1:41pm Sep 30th, 2017
Hi. So, this is going to be about my main story for now, "Society as We Know It."
"Society as We Know It" is, as of the writing of this post, my mainline fic. It began as three things: a way to be productive, a worldbuilding exercise, and a contrarian statement about the changelings at the time. Unlike what seemed to be the popular opinion way back in January, I thought that the reformed changelings were a good move. I admit, maybe not the best—but, it's still very good. And, I thought to myself, "How about a story where I explore what the day-to-day life of reformed changelings might be like? I could do some worldbuilding on my own about that."
And, that's how it started.
When it was announced that Thorax (and, possibly, the rest of the changeligns) would return in two episodes of Season 7, I waited for them—to see what the changelings were really like after their reformation. And, also, to see what else I could try adding to the Changeling Hive in the fic—see what makes a good chapter, a good glimpse into everyday life for a changeling.
Well, it has been a good journey for these changelings. But, I never seriously intended to keep this story going on forever. Sooner or later, I would have to move on to another story—and I don't mean the short one-shots that I publish on weekends. A bigger story than that. Maybe bigger in scope than "Society as We Know It," maybe smaller. I have an idea in my head, but things can change.
So, I'm planning to close the book on "Society as We Know It" within December of this year. Of course, with Christmas on the horizon, I would be writing down some Hearth's Warming Eve chapters for these changelings—I'm looking forward to seeing how they would go down. But, after a string of those chapters, I would bring in some closure and the story would finally end.
After that, what's next? Definitely, another mainline fic that's more than a one-shot. Like I said, I have an idea, but things can change. Will I end up writing another fic that isn't a one-shot before the final chapter of "Society as We Know It"? I don't know. But, I'm open to it.
