They mostly created it from scratch as a way to prepare themselves for the day Equestria would come after them. When Equestria started to become a large country, many of the Hives began to panic and experiment on new ways of fighting them. Thousands of years building newer and better weapons eventually brought about their tech.
However there is actually more to that than what I've told. Each Hive feeds on a different emotion and are situated in different regions. For example the U-ship was the product of an idea to build an undetectable ship for putting fear into Equestrian sailors which is what Queen Siphon's Hive feeds off of.
Tanks were made to nullify unicorn magic but it was later discovered that they could use that energy for a more offensive purpose. They used those tanks to terrorize the Buffalo tribes, hoping it would make them angry. That way Queen Formic's Hive would have a constant supply of anger to feed off of.
The list goes on but you can safely assume that they have an extremely advanced army, and the fact that I have not shown you everything in their arsenal.
Since someone is going to ask this question. The reason why Queen Chrysalis didn't use any of these weapons was because her Hive were able to survive by cocooning and were the only ones that could do such a thing. That and a bit of overconfidence was the reason why she lagged behind in technology. Besides, it's not like she needed it to take over Canterlot. In the show, she absolutely destroyed the Royal Guard and only lost because Cadence and Shining Armor used their love bubble to throw them out. Even if she did have those weapons, the plan was all about surprising Canterlot and having a bunch of extremely loud tanks traversing open ground would defeat the purpose.

Yes they can be destroyed. I actually did have one destroyed in one of my other stories. It wasn't easy though.
