Review #109 - The Ones We Love · 1:35am May 27th, 2017

Man, the Austraeoh series is awesome. I'm only 56 chapters into Eljunbyro, though, so no spoilers!

As to this review, sadly, the author has left Fimfiction (wrote a blog post about it and everything). So, you know, I'm sad. I'm also sad because I keep missing deadlines for these. And another reason for sadness is in the "greatest weakness" section.

The Ones We Love by Ghosttown Brony
(Sad, Slice of Life, Tragedy)
To love somepony is easy. To let them into your heart, somepony you care for, somepony you want to protect, somepony you would do anything for. Letting them in is easy. The pain comes when you lose them. This is something Applejack is not unaware of. However, after suffering yet another crippling loss of life to one of her own, the well-known farm pony begins to lose herself, falling into a pit of despair, trapping herself in a cycle of self-blame, anger, and agony. Watching her friend do this to herself is unbearable for Rarity, who makes her way to the farm determined to try and help the friend who doesn’t want it. But she has to try. Because, isn’t that what friends are for?

Review
Yikes, that's a long description. But a good one nonetheless. So, yeah, I'd call this a sad-ish slice of life in the wake of a tragedy story. Rarity gets the honor of being talked about first, I guess. Rarity is determined, caring, and willing to sacrifice for others, but is also feeling dejected and abandoned because of Applejack. She's also the only pony willing to say what needs to be said. Also, she is incredibly loyal. As for Applejack, well, she is blinded by grief and acts accordingly. You know, lashing out at those closest to her, thinking everypony is against her, and so on for the Anger and Depression Stages of grief. And then, after Rarity does her thing, she enters the Acceptance Stage, and just needs a shoulder to cry on. Sweetie Belle is, from what I can tell, mostly there so Applejack has someone to relate to while Rarity gets a greater sense of what Applejack is going through. One thing I really like was how great the narrative is. It may be a little long, but that narrative is well worth it.

The greatest weakness of this has a lot to do with preference. I found it not quite sad enough. It didn't do the best of job connecting the characters to the reader, which left me seeing others be sad, not getting sad. And that makes me sad. Also, Applejack. I downright dislike Applejack.

Recommendation: Worth Reading if you like sad. (If you like sad and/or Applejack, this is fine. If you dislike both, then don't).

I really feel like Imploding Colon, AKA shortskirtsandexplosions, drew a lot on the Assassin's Creed series while writing Eljunbyro.
