I liked the ending a bit.

Well that episode was...interesting...I guess...

Fluttershy is a Older sister?

What's your excuse, knighty?

Was it because you were too busy watching the ep? THEN MAKE THE BLOG POST AHEAD OF TIME!

Did anyone else see Link as a pony carrying all those Rupees!? Man, that was awesome!

ok. so. did anyone see that picture of fluttershy during the song. i don't know exactly when it was but it was there

3997914 I did! That was awesome!

I like the message of the episode but her brother is a douche

The moment you realize fluttershy wears the pants of her family...

On the bright side, Over A Barrel doesn't have to be the worst MLP episode anymore :rainbowlaugh:

Now, get back to work, millenials! There's room to grow in Uber and McDonalds is hiring. Admittedly they're hiring robots, so work more. :trixieshiftright:

Just think, if we knew 'I can do it on my own' was the message, we wouldn't have had to have all this silly friendship!

OK, that's enough snark for now. Hmph. :duck:

I'm surprised Fluttershy didn't give Zephyr a job at Sweet Apple Acres. Granted he would still give up, but still it never hurts to try.

3997928 That... thing represents 50-80% of my coworkers.
Great episode ruined by a character that was needed.

also did anyone notice pixel distortion of rainbow dash's mane? i think it was on somepony else but i am not sure

3997939 If the moon is falling Equestria might be in some trouble.

Poor Rainbow Dash in this episode. Damn. :rainbowhuh:

I don't like Zephyr's formulaic insta-redemption; I've seen too many of these episodes already. But worse is that the writer had 22 minutes to enrich the world of My Little Pony--to make the characters deeper, introduce a plot, expand its world--and wasted the entire 22 minutes on Zephyr, a walk-on character whom we will hopefully never see again. None of the show's permanent characters had any significant interactions with each other (conflict, disagreement, misunderstanding, teamwork); they each interacted only with Zephyr. Nothing done in this episode will enrich future episodes.

Contrast this with the episodes for Cheese Sandwich or Cranky Doodle. Those were about walk-on characters, but they were interesting, likable, re-usable characters. Also, those episodes both expanded Pinkie Pie's character. This could have expanded Fluttershy's character if it had convinced us first that Fluttershy had a problem confronting Zephyr, then shown how she dealt with that problem, but it didn't. (Though that character arc's been done enough times already.)

It was a nice episode.

3997934 That's actually where I thought it was going. Applejack would probably try to beat the laziness out of him with a bucket full of apples, so maybe Fluttershy was just being merciful. :derpytongue2:

It wasn't the most memorable of episodes, but at least we got to see a seldom shown side of Fluttershy where she's considerably less patient and non-confrontational. If only for the novelty of that, I got some enjoyment out of watching it.

I missed the first 10 minutes cause my dvr didn't record it I just happen to wake up and notice it not recording

I like the moral and the risk it's taking. People who will be like "worst episode ever" are probably those who the moral pokes at strongest. I just can't see any other option unless it is Zephyr himslef, who is designed ro be unnerving to the audience. If he unnerved you, then it worked.

My head-canon has always been that Fluttershy can sit in her cottage taking care of animals because her parents gave her a lot of money. Now I want to know what her job is.

His voice sounded EXTREMELY familiar, especially when he started singing near the end; maybe they somehow got a famous singer/celebrity to do his voice? Either that or it was just someone who pulled off a really good interpretation.

I was unimpressed. I get what they were trying to do, but they didn't have to make him a sexual harassment case on four legs. If I wanted to listen to Pizza Steve, I'd have watched Uncle Grandpa instead. :facehoof:

3997983 Taking care of animals. What job do you think she would do?

3997983
Could be a government stipend for taking care of the forest animals.

So we another one sided ship from this episode that is cannon.
derpicdn.net/img/2016/6/4/1169988/medium.png

3998002 It's not a job unless you get paid. Her accounting practices seem pretty lax.

So since rainbow called fluttershy's parents mr and Mrs. Shy does mean rarity's parents are mr and Mrs belle?

This episode hit pretty close to home for me. I'm sure it did for others as well.

3997939 Link looks good as a pony.

Well, this episode was a nice change up. Fluttershy being the most outspoken member of her family? And the most take charge pony of the episode?:pinkiegasp: Nicely played. And unlike the rather shaky moral of the previous episode, this one was on target. That you can't just 'not try', because you are afraid you will fail. The world out there will not GIVE you anything. Except (sometimes), a chance. It's up to you whether you can rise to the challenge, or be ground under.
By the end of the episode we see that Zep can accomplish his goals without sacrificing who he is, which is also an important lesson for people who are worried about losing themselves to the corporate machine, when venturing out on their own for the first time.
Okay, enough deep water...
Fluttershy and Rainbow episode. It's been a long time.:pinkiehappy: We've known they were friends since childhood, and it's good to see them hanging out together. I loved Rainbow's reactions to Zep's advances. And of the family, only Fluttershy seems to realize that Rainbow has ZERO interest in him. Probably reading too much into that, but the way Fluttershy takes that as a given seemed to me like she knows something about Rainbow Dash that the rest didn't. Crush on another pony? Lesbianism? Or maybe she just knows that her brother isn't Rainbow's type. Despite all of this I expect to see a lot of ZepDash in the coming week. :facehoof:
On a more positive note, now we finally have some Flutter family canon. Now all we need is The Dash family, an end to the Scootaloo question, and, what I'm sure would be an episode of pure craziness, The Discord family.:pinkiehappy:

(Oh Discord, where art thou this season. :raritydespair:)

More world-building, less fucking about with stupid nonsense, please.

3998051
You just sound so. . . so! . . PEEVED right now, don't you?

3998017

Fluttershy was very insistent considering I'm pretty sure she's unemployed. In my head she just claims all her animals as dependents and lives the life of a welfare queen.

3997958
This did expand the character of fluttershy, at least for me it confirmed my theory that she -isn't- shy at all but rather passive aggressive. Zephyr is the shy one, and contrasting to flutters you can see that he uses bravado and his beatnik persona to cover up his insecurities.

honestly I do agree that more could have been done but this is hardly the worst waste of an episode that there has been, and it would have been nice to see where these psychological issues that fluttershy has had throughout the series come from.

Seriously, if your names are Mr & Mrs Shy, why would you call your daughter Fluttershy? :flutterrage:

Quite liked the episode, though. More than I was expecting to, if I'm honest, largely because 'Shy was good. I liked seeing her being sensibly assertive, not "Putting Your Hoof Down" assertive. This was rather more like the Flutters who told home truths to Rainbow in "Tanks for the Memories". Also, those faces! Her parents were nice enough -- inoffensive and a bit unmemorable, but okay -- though Zephyr was a massive, massive pain for 90% of the time, though. Some of it was funny (eg hitting on Dash, even if he did sound like Trenderhoof) but some of it seemed to be turned up to 11, 12 and 13 without all that much extra effect. They could have used that time for a bit more world-building stuff. The song, too -- decent, but not amazing. And though it was probably inevitable, Zephyr's change of heart at the end (though obviously not a total one) was rushed even for a 22-minute episode.

So... yeah. Fairly enjoyable, more so than I'd feared, and it was nice to see Fluttershy doing something she would (and could) never have done a few seasons ago. Not a classic ep, and I suspect it may be quite divisive, but I'm reasonably happy.

3998032 There is that :duck:

I am somebody who runs a small business, has kept it alive ('on my own' serving customers) since 2007, and I've written eight books for (the adult) pony fandom, totaling 1.2 million words. Doing that made me a better writer whatever I choose to do going forward. I know as a personal truth that what Rainbow and Fluttershy sing is not wrong. There's a place for it (though every step of the way I can name dozens of friends, both in pony and in my day job, without which I would've got nowhere: you are NEVER 'on your own' whether it's the support of your peers or the roads you drive to work on, and to suggest otherwise is just not observant)

However, as a political statement (akin to the Flim Flam Brothers representing 'bad business') this episode is pants and would have been… nice, in say 1952 :fluttershyouch:

I would say six seasons of 'friendship is magic' and one episode of 'go and succeed on your own because you are a slacker' seems about the right balance, and look forward to another six seasons before equal time obliges us to do THIS again :duck:

And I like using Rarity for snarking about it, because anyone who knows Tabitha knows she is just as aware of the broader political context of an episode like this, as I :raritywink:

Courage, we have endured worse. And the funny thing is, remedying the problems that make this episode's aesop a con job, requires… use of this episode's aesop :raritywink:

But NOT alone. Take it from me, a little pony who's done a bunch of ambitious things: you never do it alone, you do it in your community and you work for and with everyone, not just 'on your own' :raritystarry:

If the episode instead showed how she had a problem with confronting her brother, then we would have simply gotten a copy paste of almost every Fluttershy episode thus far. Fluttershy confronting people. I know that every Fluttershy episode is about getting over a fear of some kind, but it was refreshing for once to see Flutters not afraid or apprehensive about doing something, and for once actually standing up for herself/others. Even if those others were her family, who she's probably a lot more comfortable with.

The episode was pretty interesting in seeing how Fluttershy interacted with her family, it also gave us a little backstory on RD's and FS's relationship. RD is familiar with her family, I know it's pretty implied that they were friends since fillyhood before, but seeing that continuity is always nice.

This episode...was okay. I was hoping for something better than this though. Fluttershy's brother is so lame... A very underwhelming character.

Before I go into my issues with the brother, Zeph (that's his name right?) , I must talk about his parents. While I glad we finally got to see Fluttershy's parents, I wish that they had a better personality traits. I mean, I don't mind one of the parents being a pushover like Fluttershy (it would be like an inherited trait), but both of them? It would have been good to have one parent who would stand up to their son. I mean if Fluttershy acts like her parents, then why doesn't the son do the same?

The brother is what I expected. A lazy good for nothing who can't stick to anything (until the end and that still falls). What does his cutie mark even represent? Should have aimed on that to find what he will do in life.

I would have prefer the episode to go like this:

Fluttershy's parents (one is an Earth Pony) decide it is time that Fluttershy and Zeph (who is an Earth Pony) work on their friendship, so they force Fluttershy and her brother to spend time together, forcing their son out of the house to live with Fluttershy for a week or two, which Fluttershy is highly against, but because of her nature, she accepts their terms.

During this time her brother shows great resentment towards Fluttershy, which leads to arguments. Rainbow Dash who is visiting at the time, defends Fluttershy, which Zeph mocks Fluttershy for wanting to stay grounded or rather than sore the skies like most pegasi do. It leads to Fluttershy asking her parents why Zeph treats her the way he does and her parents reveal his once desires that could never happen and that is to fly.

Fluttershy goes off to find her brother to talk to him and she stands up to her brother, forcing him to break down and tell her his feelings of resentment, which he does and we even get a flashback of Fluttershy and her brother and even the day Fluttershy goes to "Flight Camp". He always wanted to fly, wanting to follow his sister into the sky. In the end Fluttershy gets Twilight to place a spell on him that allows him to control clouds or something, so he can fly.. or a jet pack, or Pinkie's crazy flying machine.

Although this plot would be off since their home is in Cloudsdale, but you get what I'm getting at. Just wish the brother had a better characterization.

I almost for got to ask.....

Who is going to ship Zephry X Rainbow Dash?

3997934 Yeah, after stopping by Rarity and Twilight's place, I thought Fluttershy was going to take him all over the place.

I think the problem is that this episode can't work in the mlp world. Work as we know it is never clearly established, nor the taxation and cost of living. I mean you have someone like Spike that does all his work for what looks like free; Twilight who got her living space without having to pay and whose occupation has never paid out in coin; and Fluttershy with no visible job trade or income looking like she's criticizing someone else in her position that also has a big fear of failure. The line between doing work as a hobby and necessity is more blurred in mlp, especially with cutiemarks added in with their principle.

Applejack, who can be more hard line about work and absolute, might have been a better choice to deliver this particular lesson, but Fluttershy can work too if the deliver was a little different. I think what's disappointing for me is this is the first time we're seeing Fluttershy's brother and there were hardly any softer or more tender moments between the two, even after the brother succeeded like Fluttershy wanted. Fluttershy was just hardline all the way. Necessary, but not her nature. What does Fluttershy's brother mean to her? What is their past? Some bond, even a little, goes a way in affecting the impact of what happened with him and her in the episode

The lesson itself isn't bad but seriously needs to be reworked to fit the mlp median better. Maybe narrow the focus to a brother who's afraid to leave the house or someone struggling to find something he's passionate about that he can make a career out of. The lesson as is feels like it came from any adult, half hour comedy show, just with mlp characters playing the cast roles.

That's my two cents anyway. :applejackunsure:

3998088 I haven't yet seen the episode, but I must confess that I've been a bit worried about the copy/pasting of other episodes as you mentioned. I actually was just chatting with a friend about that not five minutes ago.

Now I'm actually looking forward to seeing it. :D
