A Baby Dragon and a Phoenix Hatchling Walk Into a Forest... · 11:04pm Mar 14th, 2016

Alright, confession time. I've cheated.

You know what would be awful? If an author with 5k+ subscribers submitted every single commissioned mini-fic he wrote as a one-shot instead of uploading them onto the Lemurific Box as originally promised.

Thankfully, I'm not that kind of author... sorta.

You see, when tackling one of the commissioned fics for the month of March, I found myself with a 4k monster instead of a 2k sneeze-fest. I also personally thought the story was... more than a little bit "okay." That's likely a subjective thing and I'm probably cruisin' for a bruisin', but I think this story deserves more attention than what can be afforded in a mini-fic compilation. There's already one or two chapters on the Lemurific Box that I feel the same way about... but definitely not all of them.

So, here's my totalitarianistically imposed humble addendum: If I think a minific is worthy of standing on its own, and the fic requester approves, then it very well might go up as a oneshot.

In this particular case, Jake the Army Guy--the fellow lemur kind enough to give me this story request--was cool with the solo upload. So, there it b3zz.

I can't promise this about every mini-fic request. In fact, most of them will stay within the Lemur box. (Hap's Octavia/Tank request is the only other example that comes close to deserving this treatment in my eyes, but it's already uploaded to the box so there it stays).

Just thought I'd make it public so my hypocrisy is explained.

In the meantime, I'll be working on more request fics for the month of March, and hopefully some other material sooner than later. Thanks for your attention... and for tossing the stones gently.

That actually sounds reasonable.

Plus it's kind of like a lottery. "Will you fic be a standalone? Submit and find out!"

I must have missed something if going into a compilation is preferable to being lengthened and posted alone.

Random musings:

I think this system might work best if you agreed to post all commission stories as standalone fics. Those that end up in the Lemur Box are unlikely to get seen by many people -- aside from the commissioner themselves -- and I feel like patrons would appreciate having their cool ideas viewed by others, almost as much as seeing them given life in the first place.

Of course, uploading every standalone fic to SS&E would be out of the question. But... I mean, it's not like you don't have a reputation for alt accounts already, right? Plus, I think the fimfic community at large might enjoy an account that uploads 5 minifics/month. Seems like an 'everyone wins' scenario, unless I'm missing a blatantly obvious flaw. :twilightsheepish:

And, of course, particularly exceptional minifics could still be posted over on SS&E instead of the alt, as a way of sharing the content you consider worthwhile.

Regardless, posting standalones is only going to be appreciated, so addendum away. :yay:

You never said the stories would only go to the ficbox, or only be within the limit. I see absolutely no problems with getting more words to read.

Based on the prompt I sent, if my fic ends up as a standalone, I will be VERY surprised.

Skirts, you could flood FimFiction with one shots like
I try and fail to do, and (almost) no one would think lesser of you.

I think this is a fair addendum.

Hmm, well, I've to admit I have some reservations. Besides from the atl-acount maybe another idea would be to make a new fic to contain the storys, just for the rewards-mini-fics. Otherwise, maybe for some people I wouldn't so much as a lottery than like a kind of test: If your prompt is good enough it would go to stand alone, proud and shiny for everyone to read, but if is not good enough, It would go to the forgotten bottom of a long listed compilation (Of course I'm just exaggerating to show a point with that last sentence).
In the other side, It seems just fair that you as an author have the right to find some prompt really good and want to make a full story of it.
