C&C chapter 40 entering prereads tonight + teaser

Much as I didn’t want to, I made the decision to break it up since the full length of the War Council meeting had exceeded 20,000 words and will probably approach 25k for the now-two chapters before all is said and done. The breakpoint itself will be between learning about the general war situation both Aricia and the Griffon Kingdom face, and then discussing what in all the Crows they’re going

Midnight Rising/C&C update: April showers may bring May flowers...

But of more interest is the emergence of 17-year cicadas in my area. Big, ugly, red-eyed insects that are the size of your thumb but basically harmless, as long as you can get past all the shed skins they leave behind on leaves and the everpresent and disconcertly loud background sound they produce as a mating call. Fortunately, the outbreak in my area seems pretty limited. There's a few around,

Midnight Rising update; Feathered Hearts C&C teaser...

Hey, folks. Here’s my weekly writing update. I’m tagging this as C&C since that’s what the teaser below is about, but the blog is about both it and Unleash the Magic - Midnight Rising.

Prereader verdict on new Midnight Rising chapter is in...

And unfortunately, that verdict is unanimous:

Complaints were: too meta, hard to follow, does nothing to advance the plot, and potentially makes things worse while trying to fix them.

Still waiting on Midnight Rising prereads...

Which are particularly important this time, because the first preread I got back was negative. As it came from AJ_Aficionado, whose opinions I particularly value mostly because he’s more interested in the story than the sex, I tend to give what he said about it credence but still want to hear from everyone else before I start making changes to the new chapter.

An apology to NeoArtimus · 6:39pm Apr 30th, 2015

Well, folks... it's time to face the music.

Over the last several days, I have been in contact with NeoArtimus, who, much to my surprise, has expressed to me her dismay less over this M-rated side fic than the changes to the story in the novelization. I was very surprised by this, believing that it would be the former, not the latter she'd be most upset about.

I am not going to share what was said between us, as that remains private and ongoing. But there is something I need to say here and now, publicly and unreservedly.

NeoArtimus, I apologize deeply for not informing you about such a provocative and controversial fic set in the Turnabout Storm universe. My reasons for not doing so were selfish and stupid, ranging from simple fear of your reaction to a desire to not be put in a tight spot if, as I was apparently incorrectly assumed would happen, I was told not to do it. This fic had been promised for months, and I did not want to risk its launch. You were absolutely right that this makes me look very bad, because it is very bad. In effect, I decided it was better to beg forgiveness than ask permission, and this was the result.

It was never my intention to hurt you or your story, one I admire greatly, either by writing this or the novelization. You deserved fair warning, and I didn't give it. I am now very embarrassed and ashamed by this, and can only swear it will not happen again.

I'll have more to say later about the novelization, but this is not the place. And before anyone asks, no, I am not withdrawing the side fic, nor has she asked me to do so.

With great chagrin and regret,

—Firesight

Meh, this was coming for quite some time after turnabout storm. I feel it's more of an effect that they want to be the sole pheonix mlp crossover. Keep on working, I found the fic much more engrossing than the the vids. Not to say they didn't do a good job, but I just couldn't get through them all. You know how many spinoffs their are to Xenophilia? So many, not all are good. This happens when your fiction is popular. Heck, if we take a step back, how many mlp fics are their, I bet Lauren Faust would shiver in dread if she saw some of the fics on here.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I think it's rather presumptuous to say I wanted Turnabout Storm to be the only Phoenix Wright/MLP crossover in the fandom. I would have told him to burn his adaption to the ground if I thought that way, but I'm not out of respect to both him (I'm very anti-censorship) and his fans who enjoyed his version of the story. I can also point you to a Phoenix Wright X MLP fanfic I was recently referred to that I think hit it out of the ball park and I honestly think it's better than Turnabout Storm (at least in my opinion) using ideas that I'm envious I didn't come up with and I think it sets a standard for how a good crossover should be.

So if anything I encourage more people to read this and give this story more attention. There were also a few crossovers using the same franchises before I came a long. So believe me when I say that isn't what this is about.

Both "Phoenix Wright - Turnabout Storm!" and "The Lawyer and The Unicorn" are on my too read later list, and I haven't started ether yet, but I feel the need to comment here.

Someone please explain to me why this is an issue. I see this issue pop up for different authors from time to time and it always blows my mind, so this time I am going to come out and ask why this is an issue at all.

Firesight has decided to write an original story based on "Phoenix Wright - Turnabout Storm!". He is borrowing the characters and setting and such, but his story is original. He is not claiming copyright on the other work at all. The author of "Phoenix Wright - Turnabout Storm!", NeoArtimus, is upset about this fanfiction of her work and is complaining about some or all of the content in this new story.

But NeoArtimus herself borrowed characters and setting from both Hasbro and Capcom to create her fanfiction in the first place. She didn't ask their permission to burrow from their stories to create hers, or their opinion on her stories content, so how can she get upset when someone makes a fanfiction from her work?

Why should Firesight care at all what NeoArtimus thinks? As long as he admits that his work borrows from hers, and that his story is unauthorized and not cannon, what else matters?

Isn't this entire website full of tens of thousands of stories that have all done this exact thing? Lots of stories on this site pickup right where an episode ends and keep right on going (and many include clop).

(I know "Phoenix Wright - Turnabout Storm!" is based on a youtube video or something, but that one degree of separation changes nothing. She still used characters she or they had no rights too.)

I think the problem was from what I have heard from some of the parties is a result of miscommunications:

RavenRegios asked NeoArtimus permission to write a fanfic version of the videos a couple years back while the series was still being made (I think around part 2) in order to provide an option for people to enjoy the series without the voice acting which was perfect because a lot of people were complaining about it at the time. Firesight then more or less took over the fanfic writing and probably wasn't aware of the intent of the fanfiction version or RavenRegios forgot to tell him, and he obviously made some notable changes throughout the story. So Jen (NeoArtimus) got upset seeing these big changes to the story and thought it wasn't really telling her story anymore when she intended it to be more or less a replica story for people who would rather read than watch and listen.

I don't think NeoArtimus goes around hunting Turnabout Storm spin offs to complain about them, there's a ton of them on this site after all and this is the first time this has happened. In fact she openly invited people to make spin offs and sequels here near the bottom stating exactly what you said about not owning the characters and even allowing people to use the OC characters however they want as well. link

I think this was all just a result of Jen getting upset her original story got changed around in what she thought was supposed to be a direct alternative to the videos, and Firesight was probably just a victim of not knowing that original intent.

That's just what I've gathered, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I think she's rightfully upset, but it seems it was a mistake.

3031375 Lauren Faust is pretty live or let live when it comes to cloppers. A few of the writers are even die-hard Fallout Equestria aficionados who own the hardcover. Though I can't imagine she'd be a huge Bronystories fan.

Who could be? Yeesh! :fluttershbad:

3032934 Communication was terrible all the way down the chain; it's pointless to blame Firesight anymore than anymore else involved. I note with some disdain that his apology for the side-story hasn't been accepted.

3032987
I don't think any of it is over the side story according to the first paragraph in this blog. It's about the main 65 chapter one.

This apology is owed for the side story. The novelization will be discussed later.

3031791 as a fan of both stories thank you neoartimus for being such an awesome person. :fluttercry:

3031375 well they already lost in that regard too , cause my little investigation had an official post several months before the first episode of turnabout storm was out....
and nah , faust is way cooler than that....

3031791 awww shyyyt now there's another million word ace attorney pony fic that i will want to read but wont ever take the dedication time to do so :/ .....

To be honest, the reason that I read Turnabout Storm here on FIMfiction is because I saw the videos first on Youtube, and then found out that there was gonna to be an extended version of it based on the videos. I have to say, the novelization made the videos better. It's a lot like movie adaptations of books, cartoon and anime are in the same realm when they come from books and light novels. Because it's a movie, some things are gonna be edited out, primarily because of time, content, or other reasons. It also leads to several loose ends and question marks that apparently wants us, the audience, to suspend belief or logic at times for it to work.

The book version took the videos and enhanced it, primarily because we can see how certain events and clues led to the climax and ending. Be honest--as well as the videos were done, there still had some problems, or rather loopholes and logic questions. The novelization closed a lot of the logic problems with the extended events. In essence, we didn't just show what happened in the courtroom, we were shown all of the things that led to the courtroom trial, as well as the extended epilogue to close those ends (well most of them--some have to be there for the next one). If anything, the only legitimate possible gripe could be all the events after RD was proven innocent and that Sonata Tarot was guilty, but only for blackmail and other fraud charges (nopony was committed of murder, since it was an accident caused by the late Ace Swift directly leading to his death), but I enjoyed it--there were a lot of questions that needed to be answered, and the chapters after the verdict were for them.

Simply put, the original videos were excellent, but the novelization were as good if not better. But that is just my personal opinion.

3032934 Really? liked the voice acting (Heck, it was the first Derpy I've seen voiced by BalDumboRat)... though I will admit, the Trixie voice wasn't perfect at first, but it grew on me.
Oh, and the voice for Phoenix Wright? Epic. I actually thought it was better than Dual Destiny's.
