Alright, so I HAVE been working on A Blouse Unbuttoned this week, despite my latest addiction [see Do you even Nep?] and the fact that I spent most of yesterday cutting through the back yard with a snow blower to clear a path for me to haul wood back to the house from the back garage. If anything, I would like to be working on it right this very moment. Here's where the problem lies. Most of my writing is done through Google Docs on a decade old-laptop that has next to no battery life. It's so old that the DVD drive no longer functions, which means that I have no means to repair the windows installation that has decided it's going to an hero itself with 0x0000007f [Surprisingly I do not find this error code at all humorous] on regular start-up.
Since that is no longer an option, and I cannot stand using my tablet to write at all, I am left with one choice: Linux through a LiveUSB. What this means, unfortunately, is that my laptop is effectively out of commission until I am able to download and set up a netbook grade Linux distro. Anybody who has been following my blogs lately knows what kind of problem that leads to, as well. Shared low-speed connection and whatnot.
Yes, I could write on my desktop terminal, but the issue there becomes the large [strike]monitor[/strike]TV that I use, and the quick onset of eyestrain while writing on it... and the fact that I spent all of last night nursing a migraine leaves me hesitant to test my luck. Besides, most of the time, I need to be able to keep an eye on the unnecessarily large menagerie of animals that I am responsible for during the daytime, which means not being holed up on the second floor behind a closed door.
*sigh*
So please bear with me while I am handling this issue... and once we're back on schedule, I have a special treat for all of my readers in the next chapter [do not hover over spoiler text if you want it to remain a surprise]: a Seven Fates signature mindfuck dream sequence. Once again, thank you to all my readers,
oh god not the 0x00000---- bsod , last time that happened i ended up destroying my bcd and trying to rebuild it manually , even though i supposedly did everything right it didn't work and my computer could no longer recognize that there was a windows partition on my hdd.....
but , i did eventually manage to fix it , with a very easy and simple solution that might work for you too , just take your hdd and put it in a com that has windows xp , and start it up with your hdd connected in it a couple times , when i did that with mine cause i was just trying to make sure my data was still there , xp booted with a disk consistency check , and literally in like 1 hour xp was like 'hey bro i fixed your hdd' , and sure enough when i put my hdd back in my tower it was completely fixed and i could boot into windows again
xp man , he's a real fucking bro who's always got your back.....
2791147 It actually ran a disk consistency check itself at one point... and then promptly 0x0000007f'ed itself again. I'd probably have some issues getting the hard drive out of that laptop... if we even had another system that had XP on it. The weird shit is that it boots fine in safe mode, and I was even able to prep a Live USB for a linux distro [that was too much for the laptop to actually handle] image that was present in my storage while in safe mode. It might actually be a case of something fucking the master boot record for all I know.
Can't you ctrl+j the disc drive or operate the eject feature through Windows Media Player? It's what I have to do, because my disc drive refuses to cooperate with me, and my laptop is significantly newer. It's only a toddler at most. Of course, I tend to remove unused and/or potentially harmful malware whenever I find it. I also use Sophos to preserve its ability to function properly.
And if that doesn't help, you'll have to take it to a hardware shop. (Hardware as in computer hardware. Basically, the components that allow your machine to work properly.) You could invest in multi-tiering it. It costs a bit, but if you already have the contraptions, it's rather worth it. It increases the processing speed quite a bit. And it can set a spare disc drive if your local place also has a software specialist. Don't even think about trying to take a computer past its warranty date back to the manufacturer; more often than not, they'll fuck your machine up worse than it was by removing vital components instead of just replacing or resetting the damaged software/hardware.
(This has happened to me on several occasions and I've had to replace a perfectly good computer; the first time they said they reset it to factory default, when my pc came with several defensive programs installed into it. Of course, that meant that my PC had those removed along with all the other functions that made it useful. I can't program service into a machine that doesn't have any. They just wiped my hard drive and set in an inferior function from three years before I got the damn machine.)
Anyways, it's probably a problem with an input chip not layered to defend it from pressure or heat. It could also be a loose component...
(Remember that I'm talking about the disc drive primarily.)
2791164 Nah, when I say the DVD drive no longer functions, I mean that it cannot read discs. It ejects and closes just fine. If I had to guess, the laser diode is either dead or off kilter.
A computer shop? Mate, this is a ten year old laptop. For the price they'll charge me to fix it at this point, it's probably cheaper to go to Walmart and get a cheap netbook. Neither of which I can actually afford right now. Not that there are any shops in the area that I'd trust.
It's literally my last ditch efforts in being cheap and poor to prolong this thing's death.
2791162 oh so your os is xp then , idk about xp being able to fix it's own mbr problems with consistency check but with my xp tower it usually doesn't have any problems after it runs that on it's own , but still see about putting that hdd in another com that has a fully working xp , im sure it would be easy enough to find a friend with a com that would let you do that...
and no , getting hdd's out of laptops is the easiest thing to do with laptops next to removing the battery , just unscrew the latch on the back that has the hdd behind it and pull it out , done.....
2791182 Oof, sounds painful. Still, I got a 10-15 year old clunker in my living room and it still works fine. It's slow as balls, but I'd bet if I took it to a shop, that'd fix it up. I'd have to transplant a wireless transceiver so it can connect to the net, but that wouldn't be too much of a problem. Especially since we've got at least three laptops with spare parts. Come to think of it, I could probably implant my Wii and PS3 while I'm at it... and utilize the PS3's HDMI slot so I can connect it to the TV... Hmn... Still, the money would be a tough thing.
2791188 Another problem with moving to/living in the sticks. You're never near anybody you know, and chances are any of the people you do know aren't using ancient hunks of junk.
2791189 Yup. Real pain.
2791200 We used to have 20-year old one. Black and White and early MSPaint. the only usable functions on it were MSWord, Solitaire, and an old RPG strategy game...I think it went to Goodwill at some time. Damn, I miss that game. Oh yeah! I remember now, it shut down because of Capt. Crunch. There was an old disc game in one of the boxes when I was a kid, and I tried to install it. Blammo, one dead computer.
2791200 "living in the sticks"?....
2791225 I live in a rural farming region, and there is no nearby Best Buy/Future shop.
Cheeky son of a bitch! I decided to try to start it up, just for kicks will supper was cooking, and the ticket booted up normally! Dunno if it had to do with me literally taking it half apart this afternoon and giving it a good spray cleaning or what...
It's still getting a Linux partition.
2791274 mmmk...
is that so? yeah dust build up can cause many problems , should always do a cleaning every now and then....
2791369 Still doesn't make too much sense to me. It even had one "Windows has recovered from a serious blah blah" notification for every single blue screen when it finally started back up. Either way I'm going to get some writing done tonight while the computer is co-operating.
awww im so sorry I just hope someday you get some breathing room and can do things your way
2791376 hmm that is strange....
unless it did a double take on you without you noticing , or maybe that wouldn't even matter either....
but also don't you have the os cd which you can access startup repair from?....
2791387 Still the matter of the DVD drive not reading discs.
2791415 oooh you said the cd drive doesn't work anymore , well that's kind of a big problem then indeed.....
i know there's such things as external cd drives that you can get , but you already said you don't have any electronic stores nearby , and if you don't have any other computers to work with that's a real bind.....

2791437 what?...
2791486 Me failing at reading comprehension.
2791510 uh k....
*huggles* Dangit, why do so many people I enjoy the works of are having computer problems right now and making me hate being an Aussie, since I want to help them out and get them back on their feet?! >.<
