2451695 Respect in Western culture is linked to your paycheck whether or not you actually do anything. A dude who sits in an office all day doing almost nothing but making six figures will get much more respect than a fry cook who works his ass off just to get by. As far as they're concerned, you're a worthless piece of shit who is the bottom of society and therefor they can do what they want to you. In essence, you're a serf.
